"Rusty Holt of Blue Horizon Construction was the general contractor on building a custom home for me and my wife. He consulted with us and coordinated a variety of subcontractors to make our dream home a reality. He provided sources of information to help us to make crucial decisions on the types of fixtures and appliances that needed to go into the home. He was in constant contact with us to inform us of the status of things due to the supply chain slow down of materials. Rusty displayed a customer oriented attitude sprinkled with humor that made him easy and pleasant to work with."

"We contacted several contractors who declined the job as it was not that large a room. We read C&S Construction reviews & was very impressed. We called & the Monty Crowder came over the following night. He said he would enjoy taking the job, regardless of the size. Monty stated the job would take a week & 1/2 & his prices were very competitive. They finished on the agreed upon date. Monty’s son’s Josh & Gabe were outstanding. Arrived each day at 0730, & worked through lunch! Very knowledgeable, polite & cleaned up each day before leaving. When the job of as completed, we had several punch list items. Josh came back a few days later & completed all the items. We would recommend C&S Construction for any job, large or small. They made the entire project less stressful!!!!"

"Mike, the owner, does a great job bringing his contractors and workers in and making sure all the work gets done. We're ultimately going to have them do a future kitchen remodel, that's how strong we felt about their work. They have some wonderful craftsman and are very detail oriented. They make sure that the details are done appropriately."

"They were very punctual and did everything they said they would.  Brothers gave me a fair estimate for the work I needed and made suggestions as to how to repair a balcony which had been improperly sloped when my home was built.  They were friendly and courteous throughout the process.  They even took care of picking up additional hardware so that I did not have to make a trip to the store.  In my business, I deal with contractors all the time.  It was a pleasure working with Brothers Contractors and I will recommend them to clients.

"Alex arrived on schedule and we reviewed the prioritized list of tasks I had created. He was excellent at communicating issues, like a busted heat sensor on a can light fixture and a compatibility problem with my TV mounts. In the case of one of the mounts, he even disassembled the mount to make it easier for me to return. Alex was also good at pointing out design concerns (e.g. - a can light a little too close to a fan) and proposed an alternative setup. Finally he went out of his way to be fair regarding how he was billing for his time and services. These days I am usually content to find a contractor who is either technically skilled or provides good customer service--it's often one or the other. But Alex exemplifies both of these qualities. I intend to entrust as much work to him as possible."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

A cross brace for a fence gate should stretch from the top corner of the gate’s hinge side to the bottom corner of its latch side at a 45-degree angle to the bottom of the gate. This positioning distributes the bulk of the gate’s weight to the base of the post, taking pressure off the top hinge.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

Using a steel frame may raise the value of your home. Steel is more heat resistant, has better longevity, and doesn’t need any upkeep compared to traditional wood. You can also customize a steel build a little easier than other materials like brick, concrete, and vinyl—which have trouble bending and adapting to renovations.

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.
