The provider put a large fan in the family room to blow air over the floor to help it dry faster, but it also blew any dust and some dog hair that stuck to the finish. He came back and sanded that off and recoated, without the fan this time. I asked him to leave some finish for places like under the frig, that I would do later after that be he advised me not to bother. When we pulled out the frig to clean, and pushed it back in, the line showed, but he came back and added some finish there. My biggest issue is that in traffic areas, the finish is already wearing off and losing its shine rapidly, an it's only been 6 months. I only clean it with the Bona cleaner that was recommended, not harsher products. I thought the product used to apply the finish was from Bona, but I could not find it on their site, so I'm not sure what it was, but whatever it was, it sure didn't last. In front of one of the cabinets it's completely gone. This is a small kitchen, only around 12 x 12, and it has cabinets on two sides reducing the floor space, and a large island reducing it much more; it's like an island with four little 36 inch hallways around it; not much floor at all, and the home is occupied by two retired adults so it isn't getting a lot of traffic or abuse. I'm not blaming the provider as he went over and above to try and get it right, but whatever the product used was, it didn't work for this oak floor. ( Should also mention that the previous owners put the floor in around the spring of 2013, so it isn't an old floor. They put it down as-is and added no finish so it was a pristine, previously un-sanded and unfinished floor.)

It needed a new roof. The roof that was there had two sets of shingles on it. He voiced concern about the rain over the next couple of days so instead of starting and maybe having to leave part of the roof unfinished in the rain he waited till there was little chance of rain over a two day period. He then quickly removed both sets of shingles, and just about replaced all the plywood beneath it because the plywood was so weak and rotted from two sets of shingles sitting on it for so long. He did an excellent job and cleaned up everything afterward. He was finished in two days. He also has given me a warranty on the workmanship for the life of the shingles, can't get better than that! At that point they got really angry and left. I feel like their attitude is unprofessional- getting angry over me saying I didn't want to wait a month for them to finish as well as bad mouthing other contractors. Contractor Service reviews from real Angi homeowners in Charleston, SC
Joel and assistant called ahead, were prompt, assessed the project, went to Lowes's to buy the hinges needed, and skilled in replacing the old hinges no longer worked. I highly recommend Carpentry by Joel for your project. James Island.
I originally hired Charles to refinish my front door. I was super pleased with the work performed. Charles really cares about the quality of his work. He also installed 5 exterior ceiling fans and I plan on hiring him for some general carpentry work around my house. Charles is super nice and...

DO NOT HIRE THIS MAN UNLESS YOU WANT NOTHING BUT HEADACHES! It was a nightmare from the start. He came out on a Sunday and removed 3 out of 4 of our countertops and took out our kitchen sink. He said he would be back the next day with the new countertops (we provided him with the plywood,...

I HAVE TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED MY BUSINESS UNTIL I RECOVER FROM LEFT HIP AND RIGHT KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY. I WILL BE RESUMING WORK AS SOON AS I AM PHYSICALLY ABLE TO DO SO, OFFERING THE SAME QUALITY WORKMANSHIP AS IN THE PAST. Finish Carpentry Services is committed to to delivering quality woodworking and personalized service to our customers. Our business was established in 1985, doing primarily interior trim work, but also designing, building & installing cabinets in custom homes ranging in size from 2500 to 13,000 square ft. In 2011 the recession made it necessary to lay off entire 4 man crew, and I registered with Angie's List with interior trim and cabinets remaining the specialty of the business, but also doing jobs in other categories of carpentry (see categories listed in our ad). Six consecutive Super Service Awards show our commitment to quality and service, which is the guarantee that we stand behind our work . "Mike is a rarity! We are so pleased we found and used Mike for our staircase remodel and echo all of the points made in prior Angie's List reviews. He is not rushed. He values craftsmanship, the details, and ensuring the project is completed the right way the first time. He is extremely thorough, professional and communicative. Imagine that! He is also extremely responsive and professional. While he admittedly doesn't move as fast as he used to, that was not a problem for us at all. We would rather have someone take their time and do the job the right way than work hurriedly. His pricing was fair and he is willing to do both small and large jobs. We will absolutely use him again for our finish carpentry needs."

FAQs for contractor service projects in Charleston, SC
Generally, general contractors charge between $50 and $150 hourly, though not every contractor charges by the hour. If charging based on the project, you can expect a markup of 10% to 20% of the construction cost. You can expect to pay between $300 and $500 daily if charged by the day.
General contractors are the ones that coordinate home construction projects. They are in charge of the day-to-day oversight of the subcontractors to ensure that the project is completed on time and to resolve problems as they arise. General contractors:
Complete pre-construction planning, both with the customer and crew
Provide realistic cost estimates
Develop construction timelines
Ensure deadlines are met
Acquire permits as needed
Purchase supplies and materials
Before hiring a general contractor for your home project, it’s a great idea to write down a list of questions to discuss with each prospect. Some example questions to get you started include:
Which types of insurance do you carry?
Can you provide a list of references?
What is the expected timeline for this project?
How will my project be supervised?
Will you hire subcontractors for the job?
What is the best way to communicate changes?
Will you obtain all of the required building permits?
While city and state laws vary on general contractor licensing requirements, hiring an unlicensed general contractor could lead to poor quality work, costly future expenses, and potential code violations. Be sure to check our state licensing tool to review the local general contractor guidelines for your area.
As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:
The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check
Required to have applicable state and local licenses
Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review
Paying to advertise their services
Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi
Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.
Yes, most general contractors require a down payment for project completion. A reasonable down payment for a contractor is 10% to 25% of the total project cost, though that will vary based on project size and location. The down payment helps cover the upfront costs of materials and permits and helps ensure payment for the project at hand.
