"The installer came to our home: explained how the system works, told us the cost and when we were ready, he came back and had it installed within a few hours. No more hauling salt, since he tested our water and found it was not hard so we didn't need a water softener"

"The sales rep took several water testsâ ¦ The sales rep took several water tests and showed me the results. She told me that I needed more than just a water softener. I also needed a system to address the rust and iron in my well water. I did not want to spend a fortune but the sales lady was pretty convincing. The price was good and the workmanship was excellent. My water is clean again ! Now I can tackle the original problem. My toilet has bad rust stains. I will either get it clean, or replace it. I could not do this until the water was fixed."

"Quick response on a Sunday after my hot water heater failed, with ValDel able to supply the brand of water heater I was looking for. No one likes putting out the kind of money that this type of emergency repair requires, but I was able to negotiate significantly down to almost match a verbal quote that I had received earlier in the day. Jason was an excellent technician, very courteous, and completed the job quickly. I would definitely use ValDel (and Jason) for future needs."

"Joe provided emergency services at a very reasonable price very quickly! Everything he did professionally, explaining everything in terms we understood. We lost all water on a Saturday evening and were sure our well pump needed to be replaced. We consulted Home Advisor later that night, and received a call Sunday morning from Joe. Before noon Joe was at our house to diagnose the problem, got water running temporarily. After making an assessment, he got back to us with a great quote for the work needed to make replacements to the line and replace water tank (the pump was ok!). We were much impressed that Joe had responded to our Home Advisor inquiry in less than 12 hours, and was at our house on a Sunday morning! We were also very impressed with the wealth of knowledge Joe has for well pumps and their systems. Well done Joe!! We will be calling you for all our plumbing issues!!"

"On the price, I don't, but it was also reasonable. They had also installed a water heater like a year before, reasonable. For sure they're a good service provider, any issues I have with the HVAC or my water system, I'll go to them. They clean up behind themselves; I don't have to do much."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

The main difference between a water softener and a water filter is what they remove from the water. A water softener is specifically designed to remove hard minerals, while a filter removes a wider range of contaminants above a certain size, such as bacteria and other impurities. If your primary goal is to remove minerals, a softener is the best choice. If you want to remove various contaminants for safety or taste, a filter is more suitable. Filters are also typically less expensive to install. Depending on your water supply's specific issues, you may need to install both systems for comprehensive treatment.

Routine maintenance involves recharging the resin bed with salt or potassium, cleaning components, and periodic inspection.

The average cost to install a water softener, including the system and labor, is approximately $1,500. However, the total price can range widely from $600 to $6,000. For some complete systems, the cost may be between $800 and $2,500. Labor for the installation typically costs between $150 and $1,000.

The final price is influenced by several factors, including:

  • System type, capacity, and complexity

  • Home size and household water demands

  • Water hardness levels

  • Accessibility of the installation site and the extent of plumbing work required

  • Whether new electrical work is needed

  • The professional hired and any local permit costs

While not everyone can detect taste differences in high-calcium water, water that has a slightly metallic taste probably has too much calcium.

Water purifiers and water softeners serve different purposes, so the best one will depend on your particular needs. Water purifiers remove contaminants from water (such as bacteria, viruses, and chemicals), leaving you with ultra-clean and safe water. However, water softeners remove minerals from your water so that the water doesn’t leave stains around your house or cause plumbing problems.
