"The installer came to our home: explained how the system works, told us the cost and when we were ready, he came back and had it installed within a few hours. No more hauling salt, since he tested our water and found it was not hard so we didn't need a water softener"

"The sales rep took several water testsâ ¦ The sales rep took several water tests and showed me the results. She told me that I needed more than just a water softener. I also needed a system to address the rust and iron in my well water. I did not want to spend a fortune but the sales lady was pretty convincing. The price was good and the workmanship was excellent. My water is clean again ! Now I can tackle the original problem. My toilet has bad rust stains. I will either get it clean, or replace it. I could not do this until the water was fixed."

"Joe was so kind from the start. He was able to come out quickly to evaluate if our previous water softener was able to be repaired or replaced. We had gotten quotes from 5 companies and Joes pricing was the most reasonable for the equipment and quality of work. Once we decided to go with Haven H2O they were able to fit us into their schedule within a week. We havenâ t needed to call for concerns but Joe let us know we could reach out anytime for concerns. Not that I look forward to any future plumbing problems, but if they do arise itâ s comforting knowing there is a knowledgeable and reasonably priced professional nearby."

"I needed to have the gas line behind my current stove relocated so that a new stove could be installed. Sounds simple right? Not if your home is over 150 years old! Jerry and his team did a fantastic job of chipping away at drywall, brick and who knows what else to successfully relocate the gas line. Not only that, he had noticed on the day of the estimate that my water line to the fridge was leaking and that both my dishwasher and aforementioned water line did not have up to date shut off valves which could delay installation (again!) of my new appliances. I was very pleased with the service I received and the care they took in cleaning up after the jobs were completed. I will definitely use this company again should I require plumbing services and recommend them to my family and friends."

"I have used Christian for over 10 years to maintain our heat pump and have been very pleased with their professional and prompt service. When our water heater died, I called them to replace it. While I have extremely pleased with their work on our heat pump, I was disappointed to learn they had an extremely limited selection of electric water heaters available for quick installation. My research had indicated brand was not a major factor in determining quality, so Energy Star ratings, time needed to reheat water used, and price point are major factors in purchasing a standard electric water heater. As a result, in choosing to use Christian to replace our water heater, I traded off selection and, therefore, potentially price and energy efficiency, for rapid replacement and confidence in their service. With more time, I might have shopped around.

On the plus side, from the time I called until the service was complete was only about 6 hours, and the professional service I have enjoyed with Christian on my heat pump service held up with the hot water heater installation. In addition, in discussing my family's hot water usage, the Christian representative and I agreed that the 13-year old unit being removed was actually too large--for us or for any other typical residents likely to live in the house in the future. [According to the manufacturer's website, the old unit was sized appropriately; however, other non-commercial sources on the web suggested units ranging from the capacity to one size up were more appropriate.] As a result the new unit is only 2/3 as large as the old one, which by itself should result in significant energy savings. In the two weeks since installation, with typical usage, we have not come close to running low on hot water, though it is too soon obviously to know if any savings will accrue on our electric bill."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

Most experts agree there’s not much difference health-wise between hard water versus soft water. That said, hard water is more likely to cause skin dryness and issues that go along with it, like an itchy or flaky scalp. Hard water can also decrease the life span of your household appliances and make it more difficult for soap to do its job.

Soft water is better for your hair. The minerals in hard water can dry out hair, make it brittle, and leave a film on the hair and scalp that may cause irritation. Hard water also doesn't rinse out shampoo and conditioner effectively, which can lead to product buildup that makes hair look dull and limp. You may also find you need to use more shampoo to get a good lather in hard water.

The most accurate way to determine whether you have hard water is to purchase a water test kit from a hardware store or send a tap water sample to a lab. But there are some signs you can look out for without professional testing. For instance, if you're consistently dealing with mineral stains on your glassware, windows, and shower doors, you're likely to have hard water. Hard water can also make it harder to lather and rinse soap, so if you're struggling to work up a good lather in the shower, hard water might be the culprit.

There are several things that can shorten the life of a water softener. Homes with very hard water may have to replace the unit sooner because the water softener works harder to filter out the hard minerals. High water usage and infrequent maintenance can also put more strain on a water softener.

Drinking hard water is not known to have any negative health impacts. Using hard water can lead to dry skin and hair, and the minerals in hard water can build up in pipes, faucets, and appliances. Hard water is more of a threat to your plumbing than it is to your health.
