"A Cut Above many other Contractors! We had needed brick pointing done on our home for a few years. We are also in the middle of a renovation project for our game room and that included the installation of a sliding glass door where a window was. The door install required that a steel lintel be moved up to accommodate the height of the new door. We were very fortunate that we called Michener Chimney and Masonry to come and have a look. They came out in a timely fashion and gave their estimate to us in just a few days. Once we agreed to get the work done, Jim and his team from Michener began the work quickly. They were professional and friendly and did a wonderful job on all of the aspects of the project. Communication with them was easy, clear and accurate. We would highly recommend anyone needing brick or masonry work to use Michener Chimney and Masonry. Thank you Jim for doing such an amazing job and keeping our renovation project on-time and with your quality craftsmanship!"

Customers say: Super punctual

"Rick returned my request from Angi the same day, and was out to see the property within a few days. He gave me a great proposal and very reasonable estimate and had a crew out to do the work about a week later. They worked for about 1.5 days, and we were amazed how fast they had the work completed. Everything was done with quality and attention to detail, and they saved me money by providing some extra stones that they had from a previous job. I am really impressed and would definitely work with them again and recommend them."

Small jobs welcome

"Frank is a true professional from start to finish. He took the extra time to find brick that actually matched our house. Frank and a partner repaired bad masonry work on the side of our house. Looks exactly how it should now. He was in and out in a day. Would recommend Frank to anyone!"

"They removed shutters from the front stone face. They then repaired the stone around the shutters and even put on a new window sill that was broken. Tony kept me informed when the material was in and when he could start the project. He and his crew were nice to work with, cleaned up as they were going, and did a great job. I would recommend his work to everybody."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Homeowners in Washington sometimes overlook local historic district requirements or underestimate how weather affects masonry timelines. Starting projects late in the year can expose new work to freeze-thaw cycles, risking damage. Hiring contractors unfamiliar with local building codes or using materials not suited for PA’s climate are frequent missteps. Ignoring proper drainage or skipping annual inspections can also compromise the longevity of your masonry.

Helpful?

In Washington, unexpected expenses during masonry projects often include permit fees, additional drainage solutions due to local clay soil, or adjustments for underground utilities in older neighborhoods. Sourcing matching brick or stone for historic homes can be challenging, and weather delays—especially during wet or cold seasons—may extend project timelines. Limited access for equipment can also require extra planning and labor for masonry repair or installation.

Helpful?

After finishing masonry work in Washington, allow mortar or concrete to cure fully—typically about 28 days—before exposing it to heavy use or cleaning. Each fall, inspect brickwork and mortar joints for cracks, especially after wet winters. Apply a masonry sealer every few years to guard against moisture, and promptly address any drainage issues to prevent water from seeping into the foundation or causing freeze-thaw damage.

Helpful?

Homes in Washington with solid stone or brick foundations, proper grading, and minimal water pooling are ideal for masonry repair or new brickwork. If your house was built before the 1950s or features original masonry, it’s likely suitable. Check for historic district guidelines, and ensure there’s enough space for equipment. Address any persistent moisture or drainage issues before scheduling masonry services.

Helpful?

In Washington, signs that your home may present challenges for masonry work include uneven settling, steep slopes, or large trees limiting access for equipment. Narrow driveways, overhead wires, or limited space for staging materials can complicate logistics. Older homes often have hidden utility lines or oil tanks. If your property is in a historic area or has existing retaining walls, expect additional planning and possible restrictions for masonry projects.
