Rigid foam board insulation is one of the safest insulation materials for basement walls. The panels offer a moisture barrier to prevent mold and mildew build-up. At the same time, this material is also fire-resistant, so you don’t have to worry as much about a fire breaking out as you would with spray foam insulation. 

Mold can grow on garage ceiling insulation, which is why it’s important to install a vapor barrier behind the insulation and keep the space cooled and heated as you would your living area. Doing so will more or less eliminate the risk of mold growing on your garage ceiling insulation. You can also install a self-draining dehumidifier to help remove moisture, or opt for a foam board insulation or spray foam insulation that won’t harbor moisture and mold.

Whether you should remove old insulation before blowing in new insulation depends on your particular situation. The type of insulation you need in your home depends on your location, the installation site, and your region’s climate. According to Energy Star, insulation in homes in the Southern United States should have an R-value of between R30 and R60 in attics and R13 to R25 in the floors and walls; homes in moderate climates require R values of R38 to R60 in attics and R25 to R30 in floors and walls; and homes in northern states require an R value of R49 to R60 in attics and R25 to R30 in floors and walls.
