"Recapping my experience with this company... Moved into a house with a standalone PTAC heating/air conditioning unit for maintaining temp in a sunroom that has no ductwork (the kind you see in a hotel room). From the time we moved in, the unit was not blowing any warm air. Tech came out from Spurk, and from the moment he looked at the unit, I could tell he was not familiar with it. He spent about an hour troubleshooting, and his final diagnosis was it was a faulty heating element, although he was not 100% certain. He pointed out several areas on the part that appeared to be 'burnt out'. He called the office and the approx cost for replacing the part and labor was approx. $400-500. Per the age of the unit (approx 10 years), he advised that I consider replacing it. Quote for replacing the entire unit was $2400. I paid $219 for the service call ($79 dispatch fee + $140 'normal hours troubleshooting level 3' up to 60 min fee. I ended up finding a brand new heating element online for $80. Took about 15 mins and replaced the defective part myself. Very simple and straightforward (can only go in a certain way, no real way to mess it up). Turned on the unit, still blowing cold air. I already had another appointment scheduled with Spurk for a yearly furnace check up. Same tech showed up…after the furnace check, I mentioned that I had replaced the heating element in the PTAC unit and was still not getting hot air blowing out. He looked at it again, this time concluding that it was most likely the control board that was bad. He also confirmed the heating element that I installed was installed correctly. He advised me to reach out to Dan Dillman (sales manager), as in these situations in the past when their diagnosis have been incorrect, they will refund the troubleshooting fee. I reached out to Dan, and he said because the tech had not installed the heating element, he could not refund any of the service/troubleshooting fees. I ended up reaching out to a different company in the area who does similar work. I did not mention that anyone else had looked at it or any work had been done. Took the tech about 15 mins to determine that it was a bad control board (first thing he looked at). His quote for a replacement unit and labor came in at $1650 (same exact replacement unit), $750 less than Spurk. I was left very unsatisfied with Spurk. From what I gather they seem new to this area, so you would think they would work with me to make it right. I was willing to eat the $79 service fee and $80 cost for the replacement part, but felt they should have refunded me the $140 troubleshooting fee since they did not correctly identify all of the issues. Between ineffective troubleshooting and ridiculously high markups/overpriced work, I would not recommend them."

Knowing how long your existing HVAC units can last is essential to determine if you need a repair or replacement. Typically, most modern air conditioning units can last between 15 to 20 years, and most furnaces can work properly for 15 to 30 years. If your HVAC system is on the older side and you decide to replace one unit, it might make sense to replace both simultaneously to save on costs and future hassle.
While different HVAC contractors might offer higher or lower prices than competitors, the best time to replace your HVAC system is when customer demand is low. The beginning of summer and the beginning of winter bring the most demand for HVAC systems, so if you can, consider replacing your HVAC units in the early spring or fall. Many HVAC companies offer special off-season coupons that help lower the overall cost.
The average cost to hire an HVAC contractor is between $50 and $150 per hour if charging hourly. However, some HVAC contractors will charge a flat fee by the type of service they are performing—for example, an inspection can cost between $150 to $500. Keep in mind that emergency repairs—which are made after business hours or around major holidays—generally cost more than scheduled repairs.
Yes, most states require HVAC technicians to be certified, and for good reason. Hiring an unlicensed HVAC technician could lead to poor quality work, costly future expenses, and potential code violations.
As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:
The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check
Required to have applicable state and local licenses
Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review
Paying to advertise their services
Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi
Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.
The average cost of HVAC repairs is around $350. However, that price can be as low as $100 or as high as $2,000 or more, depending on the repair. For example, replacing a capacitor is a relatively inexpensive repair, ranging from $100 to $500. However, a compressor repair is a more expensive repair, ranging from $750 to $2,000.
