I can?t express enough gratitude to John, Bob, and the remainder of the Wade crew.  First, this was not an easy job by even the furthest stretch of the imagination.  Our home is a renovated 120 year old Victorian and it presents multitude of challenges that the majority of HVAC contractors would not be able to handle, or properly address.  We visited with the top eight HVAC contractors listed on Angieslist, but not one was as thorough or professional as John.  John was also hands down the best in terms of customer service, detailed design, follow-through, attentiveness to detail, and patience.  His crew, led by Bob, were neat, tidy, quiet, and knowledgeable.  They minimized any additional construction to our home throughout the entire install, so much so that I am a bit shocked.  There are quite literally zero remnants of what they even worked on during the week their crew was in our home!   Having dealt with many a contractor in my years, this firm is a 1%?er, and what I mean by that is the other 99% of firms out there would never achieve this level of professionalism, efficiency, and quality end product.  Our home is so much more comfortable now temperature wise and I must admit, it was a little hard to imagine this happening given all the limitations the Victorian presented, but John and his crew pulled through and did a stellar job.  There may be another 1%?er HVAC firm out there, but our  family will never need to look again and Wade has gained our trust and business for life.

"My air conditioner stopped producing cold air Saturday evening, but I noticed so late that I had to wait until Sunday to try to get it fixed. I called the company I typically use for my HVAC and was told it would be $230 for them to even come to my house because it was a weekend. I completely understand a weekend being overtime, but I didn?t want to pay the additional fee so I told them I could wait until Monday to have it fixed. A technician was supposed to call me back to schedule a time for them to come on Monday, but they did not end up returning my call on Sunday. While I waited for the other company to call me back, I looked at Angie?s List to see if there were any highly-ranked companies I could use instead. John Mullen Home Repair was one of the companies I had planned to call Monday, but I noticed the hours said they were still open so I called at 6:00 PM on Sunday, fully expecting to schedule them to come Monday. John answered and said that he was on another job that he expected that to wrap up shortly and that he had another stop to make after that, but he thought he could get to my house around 7:00 PM. At this point it was about 85 degrees in my house with all the windows open, so I agreed to have him come out even if it meant an additional weekend charge. Around 6:45 PM I received a call from an employee of John?s saying he would be at my house in about 15 minutes. In talking to John, it seemed like he was going to be the one who came to my house, but I?m assuming he ended up sending someone else because he would have gotten to my house later than his estimated 7:00 PM. Having had to wait many hours for various service people to show up for their appointments, I was very impressed and pleased that they cared so much about meeting the appointment time. He showed up right around 7:00 PM and almost immediately diagnosed the issue as a blown capacitor. My air conditioner is fairly old and has actually blown a capacitor before, but the previous time it broke I used my typical HVAC company who charged me $250 for the capacitor on top of the labor and additional weekend charge (because of course it broke at the beginning of a 4-day holiday weekend where every day was in the 90s). The guy from John Mullen charged us $100 total for the capacitor and the labor. I was very pleased with that as well, so I mentioned that I?m probably going to replace my AC unit sometime in the next year and would be interested in using John Mullen. He said he noticed that the unit was older and that we could probably just run it until it dies, but explained a few of the newer units they have and the pricing for those. He wasn?t pushy at all and didn?t try to sell me on anything immediately, which I appreciated. To summarize, it took John Mullen Home Repair about 1.5 hours from the time I called them to the time they left my house after fixing my air conditioner, all for $100. I am very happy and would definitely recommend using them."

"They installed a new high-efficiency furnace in our house on 3/11/2010. The cost to us was $5,393.00. While the installation appeared to go fine, serious problems appeared down the road. Over the years, while the furnace appeared to be working fine, we kept getting notices during the winter months from our utility company that we were using more power than comparable neighbors. This was in spite of the fact that we lowered the temperature to 72 when the house was occupied and to 58 when it was not occupied, or we were sleeping. This past week, during the cold spell, the furnace could barely maintain 72 degrees even though it was on continuously. Yesterday, 2/20/15, I found on inspection of the furnace that there was a visible gap (about 1'') between the furnace forced air heat outflow duct and the main house HVAC duct. I could literally feel the hot air escaping from this gap into the basement. In other words the forced-air from the furnace was escaping into the basement, even before it had a chance to heat the house. This appears to explain the problems we are experiencing with using too much power and inability to maintain a modest temperature in the winter with a high efficiency furnace. Update: Called company and they apologized and will be working on getting the issue repaired,"

"ARS stands by their word! Customer satisfaction and a good quality of work is important to them. They will do whatever it takes to correct any customer or equipment issues. Mark is an amazing HVAC technician. He knows his stuff and has proven to be trustworthy in his heating/cooling system knowledge and repairs. When I had a recent burdensome furnace ignitor issue arise. ARS was as puzzled as I was. They assured me that they would do what it took to identify and troubleshoot the problem. They did just that!!! I thanks ARS for their loyalty to good and honest customer service!"

"I emailed several places and they called me within the hour to talk me through the whole process and made sure I understood everything in my own terminology. Their prices were super competitive that it was a no brainer to scheduled them on the spot without other comparisons. My technicians Bob and Bret were super friendly and were very professional. Left no mess, updated me when needed and gave me advice on how to keep it clean throughout the years until the next recommended service. Overall we are very pleased and will be coming back to them for future HVAC Cleaning needs!"

"We were so happy to have Sullivan Super Service (Plumbing, Heating, Cooling) come today to repair our central air conditioning unit and to service our HVAC system. Sullivan's technician, Bob Anderson, was polite, professional and experienced. We greatly appreciated his knowledge and counsel. Our AC has been out for a few days in a current hot spell, and Sullivan was the only company that contacted us. They proved the old saying that in winning, half of the battle is just in showing up and being there. We were not Sullivan customers before, but we are now! Sullivan's service was SUPER!"

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

The average life span of an HVAC system is 15 to 20 years. Even if your old air conditioner is still functional, it isn't as energy-efficient as a newer system (especially one with an Energy Star designation). Older HVAC systems aren't as efficient, and the 10-year mark is when you should start making full system replacement plans. Twenty years in, that plan should be well underway rather than waiting for the unit to die.

While an air conditioner can temporarily run with a dirty filter, it is not recommended as it will not work efficiently. A dirty filter forces the system to work harder to circulate cool air, leading to reduced airflow, increased wear and tear, and higher energy bills. This added strain can cause the air conditioner to overheat or fail prematurely. Furthermore, a clogged filter may allow dust and dirt to accumulate in your ductwork, negatively impacting air quality. It is more cost-effective to clean or replace filters regularly than to pay higher utility bills and risk needing to replace the entire AC unit.

While 72 degrees is a comfortable setting for many people, it’s likely not the most efficient temperature setting for your air conditioning unit. By pushing the temperature up to 75 or 78 degrees, you stand to save money on your energy bill. That said, these temperatures may be too warm to be comfortable for some people and are definitely too warm for most people to sleep comfortably.

The standard rule for return duct sizing is that the return vent should be the same size or larger than the supply vent. This will ensure balanced airflow in your home and reduce strain on your HVAC system.

Deciding whether to replace just the AC coil or the entire system depends on the age of your unit and the overall cost. Replacing a coil is less expensive than a full system replacement, but it can still be a pricey repair. If your HVAC system is relatively new and still under warranty, or if the replacement cost is significantly lower than a new system, replacing the coil can be a worthwhile investment that restores efficiency and extends the unit's life. However, for older systems (nearing the end of their 10-15 year lifespan) or those with extensive damage, it is often more cost-effective to replace the entire AC unit. Mismatched coils in an older system can lead to inefficiency and future breakdowns, so a full replacement ensures optimal performance and avoids further costly repairs.
