"John and the crew are exceptional! We continue to use Optimum because they do exactly what they say they will and do it the right way. We received the highest quality paint job at a fair price."

"Erik Upvall is an excellent professional contractor who caters to your needs at a target budget. Erik’s professionalism shines. Rest assured that Erik is licensed, insured, and bonded to keep you at ease. After a careful review of our options to extend our carport’s roofline to accommodate a newer and longer pickup truck we chose to extend our existing support beams with necessary hardware and expertise by cantilevering the additional roofline. Well, it exceeded our expectations while it complimented the look of our existing carport. I even helped Erik with the installation of hardware to keep my budget on target 🎯. Please do not hesitate. "We recently hired Contractor Corey for two major renovation projects in our home, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. He transformed our son’s bedroom into a fun and functional space, complete with a custom-built bed and an incredible climbing wall that our son absolutely loves. Corey’s creativity and craftsmanship really made the room something special. In addition to the bedroom, Corey renovated our guest bathroom, which now feels like a spa retreat. He installed heated tile floors, a new bathtub, vanity, toilets, and updated lighting—every detail was done with care and precision. His attention to detail was spot on throughout the entire process, and the quality of his work truly speaks for itself. Corey was professional, reliable, and easy to communicate with from start to finish. We’re so impressed with his work and would absolutely recommend him to anyone looking for a skilled and thoughtful contractor."

"We did almost the entire house through Paul. Some of his workmanship - especially the fine details like small paint splatter, garage floor epoxy coat application, and cabinet painting - was 3 stars at first. Other work he did - installing new plumbing fixtures, bathtub sliding doors, sheet metal exhaust for kitchen - were 5 stars. Paul consistently worked to get it right and make me happy. He was always responsive and available. His attitude is 5 starts. He was open about his costs. Some things dragged on but most remodel contractors suffer from this ailment. Because of the scarcity of tradesmen in Bend/Central Oregon, I recommend learning the history about his subcontractors before they start work on your house. Most were good but a couple did not have the right experience."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Removing a load-bearing wall is best handled by professionals. However, if you have the skill set and decide to DIY the project, you will still need at least one additional person to assist you. Aside from helping with demolition, you'll need another hand to install the new support beam.

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

Your local building code will list all the framing requirements for whatever type of structure you're building. Most exterior walls require spacing of 16 inches on-center, while many non-load-bearing interior walls only require 24 inches of spacing. However, there are also varying requirements depending on your construction material, so checking your municipality's rules is essential.

New builds, remodels, and additions often necessitate professional framing expertise.

There are both temporary and permanent ways to enclose a carport. If you’re looking to enclose your carport for the winter, a canvas enclosure could do the trick. It won’t be as protective as a permanent structure, but it can offer some protection from elements like snow, rain, and wind. For a permanent enclosure, you can add extra walls, add a new vertical roof, or a lean-to addition on one side of the structure.
