"Optimum has painted multiple houses for us; inside & out. They are fair priced and finished on time, even while accommodating some last minute changes. John and his crew are knowledgeable and easy to work with; and no one knows color like Billy. They are our go to Company for paint and home repair."

"Great guys. Polite and engaging. Refreshing to find contractors that are punctual, great communicators and do what they originally said they would do. Have already discussed other projects that I will be having these gentlemen do in the future."

"We recently hired Contractor Corey for two major renovation projects in our home, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. He transformed our son’s bedroom into a fun and functional space, complete with a custom-built bed and an incredible climbing wall that our son absolutely loves. Corey’s creativity and craftsmanship really made the room something special. In addition to the bedroom, Corey renovated our guest bathroom, which now feels like a spa retreat. He installed heated tile floors, a new bathtub, vanity, toilets, and updated lighting—every detail was done with care and precision. His attention to detail was spot on throughout the entire process, and the quality of his work truly speaks for itself. Corey was professional, reliable, and easy to communicate with from start to finish. We’re so impressed with his work and would absolutely recommend him to anyone looking for a skilled and thoughtful contractor."

"We did almost the entire house through Paul. Some of his workmanship - especially the fine details like small paint splatter, garage floor epoxy coat application, and cabinet painting - was 3 stars at first. Other work he did - installing new plumbing fixtures, bathtub sliding doors, sheet metal exhaust for kitchen - were 5 stars. Paul consistently worked to get it right and make me happy. He was always responsive and available. His attitude is 5 starts. He was open about his costs. Some things dragged on but most remodel contractors suffer from this ailment. Because of the scarcity of tradesmen in Bend/Central Oregon, I recommend learning the history about his subcontractors before they start work on your house. Most were good but a couple did not have the right experience."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

While it is possible to build a wooden carport yourself, especially if you are skilled in carpentry, professional construction is recommended. Professionals ensure structural integrity, proper anchoring, correct alignment, and the use of quality materials for a stable and durable result.

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

There are a variety of second-story deck privacy ideas depending on your budget and aesthetic. For starters, you might consider fencing or tall privacy railing that masks a good portion of the open deck. A pergola or an awning can provide additional cover and shade. Outdoor curtains are an easy way to add or remove privacy at your convenience, plus they’re a wallet-friendly way to decorate your deck.

Yes, a 2x6 should hold a porch swing and safely support the load. A smaller joist runs the risk of it not offering enough support for the swing. If you have a joist smaller than 2x6, add additional bolstering support.
