"Jet was very capable, experienced, and took the initiative to foresee the best use of time and equipment needs on our excavation and trenching project. We were lucky to find him for such a complicated and tight quarted site development. We highly recommend him."

"I hired Ben to recreate a retaining wall on my property. I gave home some guidance on how it should look, provided pictures and examples, however as he started to lay it out I had some modifications and feedback. He took all feedback and used his skills and experience to make it look natural but also function as a retaining wall. Beautiful and functional work at the end of the day and very reasonable pricing."

"Extremely professional, clean, and skilled. Got the job done far faster than I could?ve imagined. Graded out a building slab, trenched out irrigation and installed and prepped sidewalk. I originally imagined it would take 3 weeks he did it in 1 with superior quality."

"We were looking for someone to do a remodel on a poor remodel job in our master bathroom and I got Deepwoods Construction from an online source. Andrew came out to our home and we reviewed what we wanted done and we came back with a prompt and reasonable estimate. He and his partner came out and did an excellent job of correcting the poor workmanship from the previous contractor. The job included removing a pocket door, revising the opening to a cased opening, adding sheet rock, new base and wall texture. I am very pleased with their work, great attitude and timely performance. I would not hesitate to recommend them. My best wishes to them in the future."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

The best type of soil to build on is a mixture of sand and clay, known as loam soil. Loam soil has the best combination of these soil types to build a foundation on. The clay particles help with water retention, so it won’t erode like sandy soil might, and the sandy particles help with drainage, so you won’t see unsafe soil expansion or have an increased risk of leaks from water sitting against your foundation.

If you’re planning to dig on your property, you’ll need to check for underground utility lines. Call the national call-before-you-dig 811 number. Once connected to an operator, you can schedule a site visit to mark underground lines. This way, you won’t accidentally dig into pipes and can cause major (read: costly) issues.

While you can save some money by digging your own pool, you may end up paying more in construction equipment rental fees in the long run. You could, however, focus your DIY energies on lowering the cost of leveling your lawn for your pool or filling in surrounding landscaping after construction.

Most states do not require excavation companies to hold specific licenses, but many require at least a contractor’s license. Additionally, heavy equipment operators require a special commercial equipment license to operate machinery required for excavation. You can use Angi’s contractor licensing tool to confirm that an excavation company you’re considering hiring is fully licensed. You should also make sure that the excavation team is fully insured before allowing them to work on your property.

The time it takes to build a pool—and dig out the area—varies based on the pool size and type. A professional excavator will take between four and eight hours to dig a pool. The process will take longer if they encounter large boulders or tree roots. Keep in mind that this is a small part of the process in the long run. You will need between eight and 12 weeks to build a pool from start to finish, including the time to apply for permits.
