"The deck was a complete disaster when I bought my house. I truly needed an exorcism. It was splintering, sun beaten and faded. Terry's crew came over, power washed the deck to a smooth surface, it restored the wood and then sprayed the deck. They showed up promptly for the work, were very efficient and I was stunned with how amazing my deck came out. Looked like a whole new deck. Will be hiring them again in the future. Amazing work."

"He did a good job cleaning the vinyl siding at a reasonable price. The problem that arrived was when I asked him for a price to pressure wash my patio and driveway. I also wanted them both sealed. He came up with a reasonable price. When I mentioned sealing the driveway and patio he said that was not in the price. He thought about it for a minute and said he had some matte sealer not gloss at home. He asked if that was OK and I said yes. He would use that sealer and keep the price the same. I then asked him to email me the confirmation of this deal. When he emailed me, the price jumped considerably. He then denied that he said he would keep the same price and use the sealer he had at his house. I found that as a surprise, because Rodger seemed like an honorable business man. I have no idea what made him change his mind.. Like I said he did a good job on my house and I was ready to hire him again. I assume something upset him, to deny what I know he said to me. If it had not been mentioned to me how would I have agreed for him to use a matte sealer. I could not have made that up about a matte or gloss sealer.. I then found another vendor on Angie's List to do the job."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Building a deck isn't too hard if you’re handy with carpentry, have the necessary tools, and are willing to put effort into it. However, other factors, such as plans, permits, and design, can be hard if you don’t have experience in those areas.

Note: You’ll need another person to help you build the deck (especially for framing and setting the beams). Building a deck yourself will be very difficult if you don’t have an extra set of hands to help.

Covering your deck with a breathable tarp can protect it from snow, ice, and cold winter temperatures. This is a good winterizing solution if you don’t plan to use your deck at all during the colder months. However, it might be best to skip the tarp if you’ll still be walking on your deck or using it in a limited capacity.

Pressure-treated wood contains preservatives that give the material internal protection from rot and pests. Untreated lumber won’t last more than a few years unless you choose a more expensive wood, like cedar, that naturally stands up well to moisture. Composite decking can outlast wood but is more expensive and doesn’t look as natural. Keep in mind that you’ll need to seal any exterior wood product to protect it from the elements and other forms of external damage.

Most building codes require that spindles or balusters on deck and stair railings be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard, often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' is designed to prevent small children or pets from slipping through the railing. A good way to visualize this is that a 4-inch sphere should not be able to pass between two spindles. For the same safety reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck floor should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is crucial to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

Unless you’re using a 2-in-1 formula or painting over an existing coat of paint, it pays to apply a coat of primer ahead of your new paint. Decks see a lot of footfall and exposure to extreme and sudden temperature changes and moisture levels. The primer promotes better paint adhesion, moisture repellency, and a smoother finish, which means you’ll often need fewer coats of paint.
