"Recommending THE PAINT CREW from Waterville for home painting. I have only used them for exterior (so far) but, based on their performance, will be contracting them to do my interior as well. These guys have HIGH integrity and know their stuff. From the moment they showed up to size up the job and pointed out details that I would not have known about, I knew they were a thorough operation. Their price was competitive; but what set them apart was their extreme patience with me as I changed my mind several times re colors. Their mantra was, "we want you to be happy". They repainted my shutters twice. I don't advocate torturing contractors this way, but truly, these guys worked with me to get exactly what I wanted, and were pleasant all the way through. The job was done in a timely manner, and I feel like they went above and beyond to make the job look great. They caulked, they sanded, they alerted us to a gas leak that we did not know about, they pointed out a defect in our (recent) roofing; they even painted the screws of the shutters to make sure everything matched. We provide residential maintenance, repair and remodeling services, specializing in emergency plumbing & heating installation and repair, basement finishing and kitchen/bathroom remodels.

"I paid Mr. Phomalee $1275 to do some bathroom remodeling work that he'd initially stated he'd be able to begin between Christmas and New Years this past December. After not showing up at that time, he proceeded to promise that work would begin on eight separate dates, missing all of them. During this time I received no communication from Mr. Phomalee unless I initiated it, and when I did he made an excuse related to his vehicle or family each time. Finally, I informed Mr. Phomalee that I needed him to return the funds paid to him as it had become clear he had no intention of doing the work for which he had been contracted. He informed me at that time that his previous excuses had been lies, that he had used the money I'd paid him for gambling, and that he most recently had not been able to due the work because he'd been trying to secure a loan to cover "the bad checks [he] had written to gamble so [he] didn't go to jail". So, I'm now in a position where I've had an unusable shower for two months, and will be forced to seek legal action against Mr. Phomalee to attempt to recover my money."

When it comes to rotten deck wood, there really is no fixing it in the traditional sense—it needs to be removed and replaced. While you can certainly do this yourself, we don’t recommend it as some of the issues causing wood to rot could have spread throughout your deck and an untrained eye may not be able to notice. The good news is that replacing deck wood isn’t the most expensive project, and can seriously increase the quality and aesthetics of your home.

The best way to sand a deck is by cleaning it, sanding the boards and stairs with 60- or 80-grit sandpaper, and sanding the railings and posts with 80-grit sandpaper. You should sand in the direction of the wood grain to avoid damaging the timber. When sanding your deck, use medium pressure and aim for an even sand. Pressing too hard with a sander can damage decks, as most are softwoods.

While building your deck, you might come across something called the four-inch sphere rule. Essentially, this railing requirement for a deck states that a four-inch ball should not be able to fit through any gap in the deck railings. The gap between spindles and between the decking and the bottom of the railing must be less than four inches to prevent small children or pets from squeezing through the gap.

Lattice should not touch the ground, as it creates a possibility for rot and a termite infestation. It’s best to leave a gap of 3 or 4 inches at the bottom for airflow and to keep the wood dry. You can add stones, bricks, or other decorative pieces to conceal the bottom of the lattice if desired.

The main cause of a rotting porch post is prolonged exposure to moisture. So, the best way to prevent rot is to eliminate and guard against moisture.

  • Use wood caulk to seal any cracks, openings, or areas along the post where water is likely to pool.

  • Secure porch posts into concrete, if possible.

  • Cover wooden posts with protective sleeves or wraps, often made of vinyl.

  • Install metal post anchors for extra support.
