"Hired Tyler & his crew to do a massive job of removing dead & old shrubs dying of weeds, edging beds with decorative concrete! I have black beauty rocks. Also (2nd important) backyard dead side replanting whatever’s alive front shrubs, weed barrier & mulch. Quoted me $14,000 (+) $2000 for decorative concrete edging! Whatever we discussed wasn’t written in the quote & every single step “it’s not in the quote”. They did a good job on backyard. Garage side was supposed to be black beauty rocks.. but “not written in quote”. Then took off items to reach $10,000 (+)$2000. He offered to plant new ones, cover with weed barrier & return stone. Front got BEYOND MESSY from digging trenches. ONLY TO BE COVERED BY LESS THAN A PILLOWCASE SIZE FABRIC NOT PINNED!! WENT BOUGHT TON OF ROCKS, 6’ WEED BARRIER! When asked to fix it.. guess what?? Yup!! Not in quote! Then NO EDGING & A VERBAL FIGHT TO TAKE $11,000! EDGING?? YEA WILL COME TO DO IT! GIVE ME A DATE! NO! SIGN YOU’LL COME DO IT! NO.. THEN.. I DON’T HAVE THE MACHINE TO DO IT!! PAID $11,000 FOR FRONT YARD MESS!!"

Gas Fireplace Service questions, answered by experts

If you’re looking for a cost-effective alternative to a traditional chimney, consider having a dummy chimney installed. Dummy chimneys can either be aesthetic-only or fully functional and can be installed on both new and older homes. Whether installed to match your neighborhood’s aesthetic or to vent your chimney, dummy chimneys are made out of a Glass-Reinforced Plastic (GRP) core, then covered with brick or stone slips to look like a traditional chimney.

Ideally, your chimney cap should be at least 8 inches above the top of the flue, though it's better if it's even higher. You want it to sit that high because it won't affect the chimney's draft, which pulls the smoke up and out of your chimney and away from your home.

Yes, pellet stoves can serve as a primary heating source in colder climates, provided they are properly sized for the space and maintained regularly. They are capable of generating sufficient heat to keep homes comfortable during winter months. However, in regions with extremely low temperatures, you may need supplemental heating to ensure consistent warmth, especially during prolonged cold spells.

Knowing who to hire to install your fireplace is important when it comes to having a safe place to burn a fire in your home. The best person to contact for installing fireplaces is a mason or general contractor who has a National Fireplace Institute (NFI) specialist certification. If you’re installing wood paneling, then it’s a good idea to also find a pro who is Wood Energy Technology Transfer (WETT)-certified.

Both of these certifications show that your pro is well-equipped to install fireplaces and inspect your home for the utmost safety.

Yes, you can put a freestanding one in a corner if you’re tight on space. Because pellet stoves don’t get as hot as other types of wood stoves, there only needs to be 3 inches of clearance from the wall on each side. Placing it in a corner should not impact the ventilation—you’ll still need to follow safety precautions by not installing too close to a window. Typically, it’s 4 feet from a window or 18 inches if the stove uses an external air source for combustion. Always check the owner’s manual for specific instructions.
