"The workers and office staff were easy to talk to, well informed, courteous , and efficient. They performed a thorough inspection. Recommended and installed a stainless liner and cap for the furnace flue and a new damper on the fireplace flue. Their price was better than previous quotes and even set up a partial payment plan. I am very pleased with the work they did."

"We were impressed by S&K Roofing. First, the representatives responded quickly to our contact, kept promised appointments and kept us updated as to their schedule prior to and during installation of the actual roofing material. Installation was on one of the hottest days this year—95 to 97 degrees on the ground. Pictures were shared with us at various points during the day. About 5:30, we received a telephone call that the crew would be cleaning up for the day and would return the next day to finish. Unfortunately, heavy rain and strong winds were in the forecast for that evening. At approximately 8:00 p.m., we checked to see how the roof had been covered in anticipation of the rain; we were expecting to see blue tarp. Instead, the crew members—after working on the roof during an extremely hot day-- were still there! The crew had STAYED to finish the roof! There were just a few things remaining for the next day. Another incident impressed us: A window pane was broken by plywood sheeting that had become a projectile from a sudden gust of wind. We were immediately notified, and within two days the window was repaired. At the same time, a crew replaced deteriorating facia wood and a gutter. The work site was left clean, and we were asked to do an inspection of the yard and work area to make sure that we were satisfied before making payment."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

There are a few things you can keep an eye out for that indicate you may need to call in a gas fireplace repair tech:

  • Your fireplace pilot light won’t stay on.

  • You notice the smell of rotten eggs.

  • You hear hissing coming from the gas fireplace.

  • You notice a soot build-up.

  • The fire goes out unexpectedly.

If you notice a rotten egg smell or hear hissing, you could have a gas leak, which is extremely dangerous. Call the fire department and your gas company first to shut off the gas and air out your home before calling for a repair.

There are six main choices of fireplace inserts: wood-burning, gas, propane, pellet, electric, and coal. Coal fireplace inserts aren’t as popular as they once were because burning coal emits a lot of carbon monoxide. Any fireplace insert will require proper supervision, and it’s a good idea to install a carbon monoxide detector in the room for added safety.

The cost to clean and inspect an oil-fired chimney generally ranges from $150 to $500. The price is influenced by factors such as the chimney's height, the level of soot buildup, local labor costs, and whether any additional repairs or liner replacements are required.

A properly constructed and maintained chimney crown can last 50 to 75 years. However, its lifespan can be significantly shorter—20 years or less—if it was poorly constructed, improperly installed, or damaged. Factors like using the wrong materials or failing to prepare the brick around the flue can lead to moisture buildup and premature breakdown, potentially resulting in a more costly rebuild.

Moving a chimney is possible, but it is a very complex process that requires professional expertise, knowledge of building codes, and safety protocols. Most homeowners find it easier to remove the fireplace and build a new fireplace and chimney in the new location of your home. Talk to your chimney pro about all your options, their costs, and pros and cons.
