"We did an almost-gut renovation of the top floor apartment of a brownstone building in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. Scott Chatel was not the only contractor we solicited, but his vision of the job and his pricing were the most realistic. Scott is very easy to deal with. He was available for consultation both during and outside regular business hours. While he had several jobs going at once, his son Paul was in charge of our renovation, and one or the other of them was always available to discuss the construction and to answer questions. Scott did not let little glitches get in the way, and he took care of minor problems without extra charge. For example, we needed to move everything out of the apartment for the renovation, and on the start date we still needed to get rid of some furniture items. Scott's demolition guys took care of moving everything out. We had a tight 10-week schedule to make, and Scott was sensitive to getting the job done as scheduled. Scott met with us to schedule the timing for when different items (bathroom fixtures, appliances, etc.) needed to arrive both so they'd be available when needed, and also to make sure they were not in the way too early. It is impossible to anticipate everything that can crop up during a project, and Scott was flexible in dealing with the smaller issues and accommodating in dealing with the larger ones. The major unforeseen issue we faced was that our subfloor was in worse shape than anticipated, and needed to be rebuilt before the new floor could be laid on top. Despite the extra work, Scott stuck to the overall schedule to finish on time. Scott was helpful with design suggestions, such as adding a small soffit over some of the kitchen cabinets and creating a bar area by building some shelves in a corner. Scott's electrical, plumbing, and tile subcontractors all did good work. (Initially the tile work in the master bath was not up to snuff, but Scott had the tile contractor return, and he did an excellent job fixing everything.) Scott made sure to clean up the work area and the entire building's hallways that got dusty from the work. Scott returned at a mutually convenient time to take care of everything on our "punch list," and we anticipate one more visit (a full year later) to handle one or two smaller items that have cropped up. In a century-old brownstone, no corner is exactly square, and no surface is perfectly level. Scott's crew did a skillful and professional job of working with the building's quirks to make the work look right. We are very happy with the quality of the workmanship. He built closets to our specifications; he fit a bathtub into an area that previously held an oversize stall shower; he fit recessed lighting around existing skylights. Overall, we think we received great value: very good work at a fair price. We think Scott is a gem."

"Northgate is by far the best home improvement provider that we have ever utilized.  Every experience we had with them was worry and frustration free, performed within budget (no surprises), finished timely and exhibited outstanding workmanship.  Northgate plans and times their jobs so that they can be performed continuously, without making excuses as to why they cannot get back to your project (e.g. waiting for granite to be cut, waiting for subcontractors, etc.). 
Our basement job, a complete redo including demolition, design, plumbing, construction, fabrication and painting took five weeks to complete.  Northgate worked on it for a full day every single day until it was completed.  Previously providers we have used would have taken many months to complete the job.  Northgate designs all of their jobs and present various alternatives taking into account the objectives you have specified and exhibits excellent creativity.  For example, we required significant book shelving to be installed.  The only place that this could be accomplished adjacent to a long wall which had baseboard heating runing along the entire length of the wall.  Somehow, Northage managed to renistall the beaebaord heating system and to integrate it with the shelving system so that the shelves were flush against the wall and did not obstruct the flow of heat or apply heat to items we would be storing in the shelves.
Our bathroom job was equally as impressive.  Frustrated at the manner in which a prior bathroom redo was performed (which took over a year) we sought a new provider.  Northgate performed the job a in a few weeks, with every aspect of the job being done seamlessly, without delay and wthout waiting for metrials or other providers.  The ability to schedule jobs in this manner is something that Northgate is able to do continuously and makes a real difference in the speed with which the job is accomplished.  Most importantly, it is an aspect that removes all measure of frustration from the process.
While the bathroom job was being undetaken, we had asked Northgate to take a look at a design flaw in another of our bathrooms that was recently professionally redone.  That bathroom contained a large spa tub inset into a marble housing.  Unfortumately, due to design flaws and poor workmanship, a flow of cold air was able to enter the tub housing, which caused the pipes to freeze on a consistent basis.  We had  previously called in a plumber to see what could be done to alleviate the problem.  Their only solution was to destroy expensive slab marble and to heat the pipes.  This solution would have caused thousands of dollars of damage and was only a temporary solution that did not get at the root of the problem.  Needless to say, we did not proceed with them.
Northgate had a different idea.  They entered the housing from a different angle far away from the pipes that could be accessed by dislodging cheaper marble tiles.  In this way, they were able to insulate all of the pipes in the housing; a permanent solution. Somehow, they were also able to determine the source of the air flow and to rapair the area so that the air could not enter the housing.   They did not even break the tiles they removed to gain access!  These pipes have never frozen again in over ten years.  The cost for this service?  Less than the cost of the few marble tiles they dislodged (which, as noted, we were able to reuse).
Apart from the fixtures chosen for aesthetic purposes, Northgate uses excellent materials throughout and took the opportunity to correct design flaws made by the builder who had taken shortcuts in areas that cannot be seen and where a layman has no idea of what is happening.  As a result of one such correction, our entire house comes up to temperature far faster subsequent to heat outages.  The cause of the problem was simply the failue of the builder to inlcude sufficent bleeder valves in the heating system, a shortcut to save time and materials.
