I was impressed that on the scheduled day when, at 7:30 AM, six or eight workers showed up and jumped right into the job. Then a dump truck showed up to accept the old roofing materials. A big supply truck showed up later on to deliver the shingles to the workers up on the roof, who all worked like a well oiled machine, knowing what to do and then quickly and efficiently doing it. They finished the job at 4:30 PM and Bob was quite cooperative in discussing the bill and guarantee and such. They did a great job of cleaning up, blowing the lawn and driveway and rolling their magnetic nail catcher to further capture nails.
I feel now on day one that it will last as long as it looks since everything was professionally done from start to finish.
I would strongly recommend Bob Colquohoun and Highlander Roofing of Bethpage, NY
Minimum impact on the neighborhood:
No unnessary noise.
No loud music
No cursing or yelling
Very polite and respectfull crew
A pleasure to work with
A very thorough clean up when completed
No damage to house, flowers, or lawn
Highly organized and efficient crew
Tremendous team work and cooperation among the team.
Started on time and completed in one day
They did a beautiful job!!
I'm very happy with it!
For some ridiculous reason, I had expected a taciturn Scot, but Bob Colquhoun was very friendly and took his time explaining all. My husband and I liked him right away. He was honest, and told me my present roof would last another year or two, but I didn't want to wait until there were leaks. His price for plywood was $45, compared to $80 on a previous quote, plus, he said there would be a maximum charge of $2,000 if all the plywood needed replacing. It turned out that none of the plywood had to be replaced. Although we weren't shopping for price alone, his quote was less than half of a previous quote, and we felt that he was trustworthy. The crew of four arrived at 7.30 and were finished by about 4 p.m. They cleaned up completely, including picking up stray nails with a magnetic roller, though they did leave some nails in the street, which I and Carlos, the foreman, picked up in case our cars got a flat tire. Bob always picked up the phone when I called. His crew was careful to avoid the pipe carrying the freon from my central a/c (the previous installer had pierced it and all the freon leaked out). A $200 coupon from Angie's list didn't hurt, either.. I have no complaints.
Job went as planned. Started and completed as planned, workers were neat and professional. I even got a courtesy check after Hurricane Sandy, but all was well. I didn't lose any shingles.
If you want and adequate roofing job, you will get one. But if expect professionalism, common courtesy and someone who stands behind their work, buyer beware.
"After Sandy, thousands of calls came into our office. Hundreds of repairs were done, most free of charge.Dozens of customers we just could not get to. This is not a matter of standing behind our work. There were no defects in our work. This was a matter of an impossible workload that prevented us from helping every last person who requested it. Most of the people who contacted us appreciated our situation. [member name removed] cannot be counted amongst them. I regret [member name removed] and all the other people we were unable to help."
Most of the other reviewers just had their new roofs installed. I was happy at the beginning too. Here is my story:
You really get to see how good your contractor is when a problem arises. This company failed the test right away.
The The first time it rained, the new
roof leaked. Highlander Construction came and hammered down the shingles, but still, every time it
rained, it leaked and I had to call them. They even sealed my roof vent! After about 4 visits, they
stopped coming and ignored my calls. I had to hire another company to
find the leak in the roof and fix it. It was where the shingles met the gable - they could not figure that out.
When I purchased the roof,
they said there was a 25 year warranty on the GAF Timberline shingles, giving me the
impression that they would last 25 years. The warranty turned out to be
against DEFECTS ON THE SHINGLES, not on the roof (if you have a claim, you have to go on the roof, pull off a shingle which is about three feet long by two feet high and mail it to GAF for inspection). The shingles were
actually only warrantied to stay on for 5 years and 60mph winds
according to the manufacturer, GAF. On Long lsland, a 60 mph wind is nothing. Our Nor'easters reach over 100mph winds. So the product was the wrong product, as I found out.
During the Sandy storm, many shingles on one section of the roof blew off like leaves in the wind.
The insurance adjuster said that they were installed improperly. I
called Bob Colghoun of Highlander about 30 times from December, 2012 to
February 2013 and left messages. He did not return one call. When I
finally reached him, he said he would come over and inspect the damage.
This went on for four weeks and he never came over.
I said I had a warranty and he failed to respond or honor it. He did substandard
work and would not back it up. I understand he was busy, but he did
not respond to 3 months of messages or come over when he said he would.
Do not have Highlander Construction do any work on your house because they
are not dependable or qualified. They don't even have the courtesy to return a phone call. They will put on a pretty roof, promise you everything and take your money and give you a worthless warranty. Use a company that is recommended by the roofing manufacturer. It is a big investment and it has to be done
right. Make sure you see the actual warranty and do not believe what
they tell you. I have had my Highlander roof for over 10 years and after they get your money, they will ignore you..
"Shortly after installing [member name removed] roof, 13 years ago, he called to report a stain on his upstairs ceiling. After failing to find any defect in the roof on my first 3 visits, i crawled through his attic while it was raining and found water pouring in through the gable vent of his NEW SIDING job. I told him to call his sider to repair the leak his work caused. I received neither thanks nor payment for my efforts. I heard from [member name removed] 13 years later after Sandy, and while it was my intention to try to be of assistance to him, my previous experience with [member name removed], and a warranty that expired years ago, did not make him the highest priority amongst an impossibly heavy workload. The dishonesty in this review reenforces my original assessment."
