"My initial review was somewhat marginal, but now several years later I will say that the reinforcement has been perfect, and they did eventually provide the engineered drawings that were promised shortly after the project completion. Only hitch was with the length of the steel, which they did correct by welding on tabs to each end. Ultimately it was a good job and completed in one day. Would definitely use them again if I needed to reinforce a structure."

"Joe designed a beautiful family room addition to expand our Cape Cod style home. His design integrated the new room beautifully into the existing house and it looks like it was always there.  All of the builders who bid on his design remarked how detailed and complete his plans were. I would use him again without hesitation. A really good architect and a heck of a nice guy.

"Came to my project site quick and gave me a detailed description of what will be done , and also gave advice on how to help with the project like designing it for a budget friendly price for when we hire contractors to do the job , he had the architect plans drawn and approved asap with no flaws or re dos , the plans were approved right away at the town hall permits , couldn’t be happier and the price was no where close to what others were wanting to charge for less service and help, he stayed and helped us design our rental kitchen and bathroom with his ideas and it just made sense to use his design , you can tell he’s experienced and knowledgeable, and agian the price is best you’ll find , 5 stars will definitely use when I need an architect again."

"Cigano identified a number of important changes to my architectural drawings to strengthen my structure (a car port). The changes recommended and implemented to my plans ensured my Town would issue a building permit. The Town had rejected my initial drawings and required its review and approval by a structural engineer or architect. Cigano really came through and its owner was easy to work with and highly professional. I would highly recommend Cigano."

"They were excellent. They quickly made a draft that only needed 3 minor adjustments. The final product was exactly what I needed. They referred me to a structural engineer for review. The whole process took half of the time that they initially estimated. I would definitely use them again."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

In Jersey City, structural assessments typically require 1–2 weeks, while foundation repairs or beam replacements often take 2–6 weeks, depending on building age and access. Larger projects, such as major renovations or new construction, may extend from several months up to a year, especially when navigating historic district guidelines, soil stability concerns, and urban permitting requirements unique to the area.

Helpful?

In Jersey City, if you notice diagonal cracks forming near windows or doors, shifting of brickwork in historic brownstones, or gaps appearing at the base of foundation walls, these may signal that previous structural repairs are failing. Persistent dampness in basements, rust stains on exposed steel beams, or sudden misalignment of staircases are also unique local indicators that structural assessment or repairs may be necessary.

Helpful?

In Jersey City, start by photographing and dating any cracks or changes you observe, especially in brick or stone facades. Monitor these areas for expansion after heavy rain or snowmelt, as local weather can accelerate issues. Keep basement sump pumps in working order and ensure downspouts direct water away from your foundation. If you spot rapid changes or structural movement, contact a local structural engineer promptly.

Helpful?

In Jersey City, structural projects often intersect with plumbing, electrical, or HVAC systems—especially in older row homes where these utilities are routed through load-bearing walls or floors. Foundation repairs may disrupt water or sewer lines, while wall modifications can impact wiring or ductwork. If your home has shared walls or historic features, a structural assessment can help anticipate and coordinate necessary adjustments to all affected systems.

Helpful?

In Jersey City, foundations are particularly vulnerable due to shifting soils and a high water table. Basements in older homes often experience water seepage, while flat roofs can develop drainage and snow load issues. Load-bearing walls in converted lofts or brownstones may weaken over time, and steel fire escapes are prone to corrosion from urban exposure, making regular structural inspections essential.
