"They were able to replace the skylight in less than 2 weeks after the quote. They did a good job and make the finish on the inside look good. A few weeks later, there was a heavy rain and my new skylight is no longer leaking like my old one that was replaced."

"My experience with Nice and Fast Construction was entirely positive throughout all stages of the project. They came right over, gave a clear estimate, preparing an electronic itemized invoice, and scheduled the work to take place at a mutually convenient time. They showed up on time, and updated me with pictures as the work progressed throughout the day. Their work was professional, efficient and clean. I highly recommend this company for roofing, skylight and gutter needs."

"I couldn't be happier with the service from Jersey Construction Experts. They completed a full roof inspection and replaced several damaged shingles with high-quality materials. Their communication and attention to detail were exceptional. If you're searching for residential roofing services in NJ or the best roofing company in New Jersey, they deserve five stars."

"We had brothers aluminum build a front portico on our house, put on a new roof and do all new new siding. It was a true pleasure working with brothers aluminum and especially Ted. The process was very smooth and all the work was fully completed within 2 weeks. Ted was true to his word on everything. We are very specific about the look we like and Ted went out of his way to have his azek crew build beautiful mouldings above the windows and door. I am very detail oriented and quite picky about the work done on my house. Most contractors I can find some flaws in the work, but I have to say the brother's crews are by far the best I have ever seen. Their work is emaculate. I literally could not find one flaw in anything they did, from the portico to the roofing to the siding. And on top of that they clean incredibly after each day, you would have no idea anyone was working on the house that day. They left it spotless. Ted was also a fantastic communicator. Any email I sent was answered within hours, even on weekends. He always made himself available and was there on the days the jobs started to see if we had any questions. I would recommend Brothers Aluminum for any work you are having done on your house, a truly great company!"

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Water will leak through a skylight if there are issues in the sealing of the skylight. Find and fix those issues yourself if possible, but it’s a good idea to contact a professional, as there could be much more water damage than you initially saw. Plus, it’s dangerous to work on a roof without the proper safety equipment and know-how.

Yes, you can cover up a skylight if you no longer wish to have it in your space. There are a few options for covering up a skylight. One option is to install a skylight cover or shade that can be easily opened or closed as needed, allowing you to control the amount of light entering the room. Another option is to cover the skylight with a solid material, such as plywood or drywall, effectively sealing it off. However, when covering a skylight, it's essential to ensure proper insulation and waterproofing to prevent any issues in the future.

While it is possible to install a skylight as a DIY project, it is not recommended. Skylights are the most likely type of window to leak due to their position on the roof. Even minor mistakes during installation can lead to significant water damage and high repair costs. Additionally, working on a roof is dangerous, especially when maneuvering heavy, bulky windows. Due to the required roof modifications and the need for proper sealing and structural safety, hiring a professional skylight installer is strongly advised to avoid costly long-term issues.

Yes, skylights can affect a home’s energy efficiency, either positively or negatively. Properly installed, energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings, double glazing, and UV-blocking glass can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce heating and cooling costs. However, poorly insulated or older skylights can contribute to heat loss in winter and excess heat gain in summer, lowering overall energy efficiency.

Ceiling costs depend on many factors, such as the material used and size, but coffered ceilings are considered one of the more expensive ceiling options. If you want to install a coffered ceiling but have a limited budget, consider using plywood instead of hardwood—it costs $2–$4.50 per square foot, while hardwood can be as much as $20 per square foot.
