"After over a month of communications, Darrell finally showed up. We paid over $360 at the time. The next time we tried using our gas fireplace, it did not work. After over two months of broken promises (via texts and phone calls) to return and continue working on the fireplace, we have given up. Pleasant enough and seemingly knowledgeable, but completely unreliable."

"Hey guys Just wanted to let everyone know who not to use for concrete slab or anything else the supposedly do (Lightning Construction) . I will be showing you guys the communication that I had with this so called ā€œcontractorā€ . From beginning to current. He calls himself Sebastian on the card . I called ā€œSebastianā€ asking him for a quote for a ā€œ24x50 slab for a metal building and a 10x8 pad for my well house . He said sure I can help you with that and when can I come by to give you a quote . I said anytime just let me know . We scheduled the time for the same day and he showed up as planned . I’m thinking ok he’s on time this is good but the average contractor shows up on time for a bid . Anyways we walk back to where I wanted the pad and ā€œSebastian AND his girlfriend start taking down measurements and notes . So we talk some more I tell him exactly the measurements where the concrete pad is going . The size of the footing and thickness of the slab and footing and rebar requirements. He said no problem been doing this for a long time and my dads been doing it for over 20 years (I think that his dad has been a helper for over 20 years) because who could screw up a slab that badly is not a foreman or an concrete owner who’s been pouring and setting forms for over 20 years. Anyways …… Sebastian sends me the quote and I’ll show you the quote with my requirements for both slabs . ( Apparently I was suppose to have on the contract ā€œsquared slabā€)??ā€ā™‚ļø So I go over the contract with the wife and we decide to move forward with ā€œSebastianā€ and his girlfriend and father and heck who knows who else . Oh yeah Lightning Construction is the actual name of the company. LET THE GAMES BEGIN !!!! Or LET THE PROBLEMS BEGIN !!!!! So Lightning Construction requires half down for a deposit to start the job (bad sign ) . I agreed reluctantly but I agreed . He said that they would be there probably Wednesday and Thursday to do the framing and pour on Saturday. They show up on Wednesday start the job and they start clearing the concrete slab area with shovels ? yeah shovels !! That area was covered in 2ft tall weeds but they cleared it. Started framing for the slab and it looked like he had no clue how to use the laser leveling system. He finally puts that away and starts measuring the forms and was having problems there as well . Clearly he was because the pad is not square and you’ll see what I mean when I post the pictures! Words cannot describe clearly how bad this Lightning Construction company did this slab !!! So I go inside the house for a while and come out and I’m checking the footings ( ā€œthe footings ooooh the footings ā€œ) like any homeowner would do . And there 8 inches deep in some areas and 6 inches deep in other areas . I tell the guy that it’s not correct and that it’s suppose to be 12 inches deep and 12 inches wide footing . He says no 9 inches . I leave to call the ā€œboss Sebastian ā€œ and he texts me because he is at his day time job ??ā€ā™‚ļø and says that if I want it at 12 then I need to pay more because it’s more concrete . Ummmmm …. When did I say 9 inch footing and when has anyone or legit concrete company ever poured a 9 or 8 or 6 inch footing ( in some areas ) for a 4 inch slab ?!!! I gave him the plans with 1ft x1ft footing and I told him that’s what it needed to be. So I grab the contract and what do you know people it also has 1ft footings on it . So he corrects himself and says it was his mistake and he’ll correct it and have the guys fix it . So I tell him thank you and I start checking their work . You will not believe the stuff that happened with this Lightning Construction ā€œcompanyā€ . The boards were crooked ā€œwell you know what that means ā€œ and the footings were not done . The father (owner) told his son that he finished the footings . He didn’t . The rebar was not complete . The father told him the footings were complete . They weren’t!!! ??ā€ā™‚ļø??ā€ā™‚ļø. The son (owner) said no they finished them , they did . Maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me . Well they weren’t !!! I went back outside and cheek one more time and I was correct. I called and then texted letting him know that it wasn’t done then he calls just saying I’m sorry Robert I have so many things I’m trying to check on and do . Your right their not done . They will finish them tomorrow. I said ok . Well they finish the pour . Sorry , there was more but this is getting long . The installers come 3 weeks later and they start checking the pad and what do you know people !!! It’s crooked and I mean like a 4 year old did the framing for the slab . It’s sooooooo baaaaaaaad ??ā€ā™‚ļø?????????ā€ā™‚ļø????? this is going to take a couple of posts stay tuned ….. more to come ……. Oh I’ll be posting our text conversation so you can see what kind of scum bag he and his company really are ."

Gas log services FAQs

A gas log fireplace should be inspected and serviced as needed once a year. Preventative maintenance can help keep your fireplace in working condition and save money in the long run by avoiding more costly repairs on parts that could have been fixed sooner with a regular inspection.

The cost difference between a gas fireplace and a wood-burning fireplace depends on the type of wood-burning fireplace installed. The cost to install a gas fireplace tends to be cheaper than the cost to install a brick wood-burning fireplace. Installing a gas fireplace costs about $3,600 on average, whereas the cost to build a masonry wood-burning fireplace can go up to $30,000. The cost to install a wood-burning fireplace insert or stove can cost from $700 to $6,500, about the same as a gas fireplace on average.

The cost to repair a fireplace depends on the type, extent of repairs needed, and your location. The average cost to repair a fireplace varies depending on the part of the fireplace that needs work:

  • Firebox: $160–$2,500

  • Refractory panel: $200–$300

  • Hearth: $150–$800

  • Mantel: $500–$1,200

  • Pilot light: $100–$350

  • Igniter: $100–$150

  • Gas valve: $150–$300

  • Thermocouple: $75–$350

  • Thermopile: $75–$350

Yes, it can be worth installing a gas fireplace, depending on your home heating needs. The cost to install a gas fireplace can be much lower than the cost to install a comparable wood-burning fireplace. The convenience of starting a fire with the flip of a switch and turning it off just as quickly makes a gas fireplace a big time saver over starting and maintaining a wood-fueled fire. A gas fireplace also does not require ash cleanup or frequent chimney cleaning to remove creosote and other buildup that can lead to chimney fires. Gas fireplaces burn and heat much more cleanly than wood fireplaces.

A gas fireplace insert costs about $3,600 to install, on average. The cost to install a gas log insert ranges from about $700 to $6,500, depending on the size, type of insert, how it works, and heating needs. Gas fireplaces need electrical and gas lines installed properly, so hiring a pro is recommended rather than trying to DIY installation.
