"Taz is our go-to contractor, because they are problem-solvers, detail-oriented, and just generally do a terrific job on both large and small projects. At our house (at different times) Taz has done structural work for us; fully renovated our kitchen; installed a pocket door on a tiny 1/2 bathroom; fixed the walls and floor in a formerly useless closet; and, tore out a huge mess of a mechanical room, turning it into useful, attractive storage space. They deliver on time (including amazingly short timeframes) and on budget (as much as any contractor can be, given the fluctuation in material costs over the past few years). They do a terrific job of minimizing mess and displacement for the homeowner and pets. Would never use anyone else but Anthony and his talented crew. He may sometimes cost more than other contractors, but you get what you pay for - you may find cheaper, but you will NOT find better. And when Anthony does the work, he stands behind it, while others don't."

"Walter and his crew did an excellent job completely relandscaping my yard from the ground up. They ground a stump, did the grading, installed retaining walls and underground drainage, installed sod, planted all kinds plants, and laid boulders, gravel and pavers. They also built two giant brick walls that collectively stretched about half an acre. They were professional, respectful, responsive, kind and they showed up when they said they would. A couple times mistakes were made because of me and they corrected it and didn’t charge me. Overall, we received a great value for the price we paid and we highly recommend their services."

"Wildfire Masonry (Guillermo Espinosa) did a fabulous job with the fireplace. The finished product is stunning. Guillermo was extremely professional and his goal was that we were completely satisfied. At the beginning of the project, we were not sure exactly what we wanted so he provided pictures and ideas. He worked with us the entire time to make sure we were getting what we wanted. His craftsmanship is superb and we would highly recommend him. He also has a delightful father who founded the company and often comes to the job site. I thoroughly enjoyed talking with him when he came."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Unexpected expenses during gas log service involve necessary safety upgrades. Contractors find deteriorated mortar or cracked flue tiles in older Albuquerque homes, requiring unplanned masonry repairs. You must account for mandatory permit fees and the addition of required carbon monoxide detectors. Because NM experiences seismic activity, inspectors mandate upgrading older gas line connections to flexible, seismic-rated connectors to meet current building codes.

Helpful?

Gas log service requires an annual pre-season inspection in August or September. The dry, dusty Albuquerque environment clogs burner ports quickly, making thorough cleaning essential. A licensed professional will test your thermocouple and inspect your flexible gas connectors for seismic stress. Because high altitude alters combustion, you must test your carbon monoxide detectors monthly. Shut off your pilot light every summer to reduce wear and tear.

Helpful?

Before calling a professional for gas log service, safely handle a few minor tasks. Albuquerque has a dusty climate, so gently brush surface dust off the ceramic logs when the unit is completely cool. Check that your fireplace damper is fully open and confirm the gas shutoff valve is positioned correctly. Never attempt to adjust gas valves or pilot assemblies yourself. Always evacuate immediately if you smell gas.

Helpful?

Gas log service impacts several household systems. Vent-free units produce moisture that circulates through your forced-air HVAC system. Adding a new unit alters your whole-house gas supply pressure, especially in older Albuquerque properties with undersized lines. A professional will assess your total gas load to ensure safe operation. If your home uses evaporative cooling, chimney work alters home depressurization and increases backdrafting risks during the shoulder seasons.

Helpful?

When hiring a professional for gas log service, always verify they hold an active NM mechanical or gas license and carry liability insurance. Confirm the contractor pulls all required local permits. Ask specifically about their experience adjusting gas appliances for high-altitude operation. Schedule your service in late summer or spring to avoid the busy fall season. A qualified contractor will also assess your existing flue and damper configuration.
