"We had a first-rate experience with this renovation team. They truly helped us realize the vision of what we imagined, and beautiful results were delivered. A home project of this scale is daunting to say the least and if issues arose they were addressed and resolved. We are absolutely thrilled with how everything turned out and would hire them again."

"I called, got an estimate and hired Barnes Builders to help me fix/remodel outdoor stairs. The stairs went to a studio I owned on the second floor above the garage. The stairs have been leaking and slowly falling apart over the past year. Barnes Builders came in, removed all worn material and installed all new stairs and finishing so they won't leak anymore and honestly, they look great! Highly recommend!"

"AMC did a bathroom remodel in m home. I have an older home and Hugo and his provided great suggestions and guidance to work around some of the quirks inherent in older builds. There were shortages of materials due to COVID but AMC didn't miss a beat and aggressively pursued getting what was needed to keep on schedule. Hugo cares about the customer, listens and wants to ensure they are happy with the results. I highly recommend Aztec Mountain Construction."

Home Building questions, answered by experts

Foundation design and stucco applications are highly sensitive to errors during home building. Improper footings in expansive clay or caliche lead to severe structural cracking. Skipping proper flashing or drainage planes behind stucco causes chronic moisture intrusion. Flat roof waterproofing mistakes also result in immediate ponding and structural damage during intense NM monsoons. Always secure proper permits and inspections to catch these critical flaws early.

Helpful?

Assess your local soil conditions, as caliche hardpan and expansive clay complicate foundation work during home building. Check your zoning and lot coverage limits, especially in historic districts with strict design rules. For older homes, inspect for outdated electrical panels, septic systems, or hazardous materials like asbestos. Hiring a local professional to evaluate these factors ensures your property is ready for a successful project in Albuquerque.

Helpful?

During home building, you must balance traditional aesthetics with modern performance. Maintaining a classic flat roof requires frequent maintenance to prevent leaks during intense summer monsoons. You face similar choices when adding south-facing windows, which provide winter warmth but cause severe summer overheating if overhangs are miscalculated. Balancing these regional architectural traditions with practical weather protection is essential for any project in Albuquerque.

Helpful?

Start by obtaining a soil report to identify caliche layers that dictate foundation designs for home building. Check your flood zone status and local zoning rules to determine allowable building heights, setbacks, and lot coverage. You should also evaluate your south-facing sun exposure to maximize passive solar efficiency. Reviewing these details shapes a safe and compliant construction plan for your property in NM.

Helpful?

Ignoring small stucco cracks allows monsoon moisture to penetrate and damage your walls. Overwatering traditional landscaping near your foundation introduces water into expansive soils, causing structural movement. You shorten the lifespan of home building work by neglecting to clear flat roof scuppers or failing to replace sun-damaged exterior window caulk. Address these maintenance tasks promptly to protect your Albuquerque property from severe weather damage.
