Robb came out to my house twice before I actually decided to go ahead with the project. Initially he came out in the summer of 2015, but I held off as I had other expenses to take care of. This winter I could no longer stand the aesthetics of the chipping brass glass doors and the soot which had stained the brick façade. Also, I was sensitive to the smoke from the fire, and wanted a cleaner burning and more convenient way to enjoy the warmth of a fireplace.
Once I actually decided to go ahead, Robb came back to take new measurements, as I had decided on a different unit. I went with a Valor G4 insert. The installation took less than 4 hours, including a new stainless steel liner and the gas hook up. The men left the place clean, and the fireplace was useable immediately.
What I like about Clappers is that as opposed to the other 2 fireplace showrooms that I visited, is that Clappers came out to take the measurements. At the other 2 places, the customer is responsible for taking all the measurements and I was worried that I might make an error with that. Also, at the other places I went to it was difficult to get a bottom line cost - they quote you the unit price, and give an estimate for installation however plumbing and electrical contractors were a range of prices, as the customer was responsible to getting their own contractors. I had a budget in mind, and wanted to know what I was signing up for.
Robb who was there, was also able to give me valuable advice on the type of unit I might want, given the size of the room, the general flow of the house and the arrangement of the furnishings in the room. Another advantage I felt with Clappers (as opposed to other places) is that they coordinate the plumber/electrician and other tradesman, to make the installation go quickly and smoothly. He is also professional, does not pressure sell, and is pleasant.
Overall it went great. We are enjoying the new fireplace, despite the warmish weather thus far - Robb is a patient and very helpful service provider, and I would recommend Clappers to anyone who wants to install a new gas fireplace.
His price was virtually the same as the other company's in total, but some of the line items were more or less. Bottom line was competitive.
Robb was very fast and professional. He came to the house once to check my measurements and confirm that I had selected all the right components. One piece needed to be custom adapted to cover the oversize of my old fireplace and he used a specialist who did a seamless job. On the day of installation, two subcontractors came--a plumber to run the gas line and another to run the flue liners. Robb did the interior work himself.
All was done very efficiently. No dirt or mess. No call backs, so far. He explained the remote control. The town plumbing inspector signed off commenting that they always do a good job.
Now I have instant fire and warmth at the click of a button. No more smoke filled house! My living room is back to being comfortable. I would highly recommend Clapper's and a Valor radiant heat fireplace.
P.S. He has a lovely showroom in Sudbury. It's not a giant showroom but it is lovely and feels like a home…you get a very good sense of what your fireplace will be like!
He also had to deal with a couple of difficult issues during the work. we rebuilt the middle of our house from the foundation up and the fireplace was installed in this area. Behind the fireplace was an existing garage and on the left side of the fireplace was the front of the home. We did not want the fireplace vented out in the front. The back of the house has an overhang on the second floor so the venting was tricky. He vent it through the garage and out the back but only certain fireplace models allowed us to side vent this far. We had to change the venting after the fireplace was installed as well and Robb never complained and changed the venting for us at no charge. He also added insulation to the fireplace framing which the contractor would normally do for a very small fee. On top of this he had to custom grind part of the front grille on the fireplace due to the height of our brand new wood flooring which was installed after the fireplace but before the grille was attached. Again he did this at no charge.
The fireplace looks and works great and he recommended a great custom mantel guy to us as well. I would use Clapper's again for any fireplace needs.
I was anxious going into the project due to having the side of my house opened up. Everything went very smoothly and I couldn't have been happier with the end result. You couldn't even tell they were there except that I was now enjoying my wonderful gas fireplace at the flip of a switch.
I was having my house converted to gas at the same time so in addition to the above individuals I also had 2 people doing the house gas conversion. All teams worked very well together to get both jobs done within the 2 day period and everything has been running terrific ever since.
