"I cannot sing the praises of Jose and his team enough. I purchased a new home that had carpeting everywhere and hired J & J Elite Carpentry Inc to replace with wood floors. They did an AMAZING job as you can see from the pictures. J&J even took care of replacing a few closet doors. Jose and his team are very friendly, knowledgable, patient, responsive, on time and professional. They communicate and are transparent with you every step of the way and get the job done with such great detail and care. They also specialize in other areas so I plan to hire them for other home repair needs."

"As it happens, Wilber's Painting has skilled carpenters on staff who are competent, experienced, and committed to old world craftsmanship. Our good fortune was getting Maynor, a highly talented carpenter, who constructed and installed the door, which is quite attractive. The installation was tricky because the 90 year-old frame was not perfectly squared but he managed to get the right fit. Mahogany was used for the door frame and safety glass for the insert. I opted not to have a screen insert, so the glass is a permanent fixture."

"Harvey came and gave me a quote and was there 2 days later, as agreed, with 3 new doors and frames. He installed them perfectly and the whole process was very easy and professional. I would definitely recommend him and am in fact using him for a new project next week."

"We had Monk's paint the exterior of our house, and replace a number of damaged shingles. We are very pleased with the quality of the work. The paint job is flawless, and even though the house is more than 40 years old, the carpenter managed to make the new shingles blend in perfectly. Everyone we dealt with, from the first phone call, to the estimate, through the completion of the job, was professional and courteous. Phone calls and emails with questions were followed up on promptly. There were a few delays due to materials and workers not being immediately available, but overall the project was completed in a timely manner. We are definitely happy to have chosen Monk's for the job."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

There are a few easy ways to locate a wall stud without a stud finder. First, try knocking on the wall with your knuckles. Most parts of the wall will sound hollow, but when you tap over a stud, it will sound more solid. Alternatively, since studs are spaced 16 or 24 inches apart, you can measure those distances from a corner of the room, which will always have a stud.

Most of the time, you’ll want to use screws on your subfloor rather than nails. Nails can actually weaken plywood, whereas screws can easily penetrate without damage. They also form a more secure connection because of their shape, preventing squeaky floors and tightly holding the subfloor in place. That said, some contractors do prefer nails depending on the type of floor covering because they allow for more flexibility.

An A-frame home can be cheaper to build than a traditional house, but that is not always a given. Prices can be fairly similar in some cases, depending on the location, design, and necessary site preparation. Costs for an A-frame typically run between $100 to $200 per square foot, which is comparable to the cost of a traditional home. The cost of an A-frame can come in under those numbers if you opt for a prefabricated kit.

Modern brick houses are really stick-built homes with a brick facade for aesthetic purposes only, so most have framing. With genuine brick construction, most homeowners install furring strips over the interior of the brick and then install drywall over those strips to cover the brick wall, so they don’t have traditional framing.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.
