"I cannot sing the praises of Jose and his team enough. I purchased a new home that had carpeting everywhere and hired J & J Elite Carpentry Inc to replace with wood floors. They did an AMAZING job as you can see from the pictures. J&J even took care of replacing a few closet doors. Jose and his team are very friendly, knowledgable, patient, responsive, on time and professional. They communicate and are transparent with you every step of the way and get the job done with such great detail and care. They also specialize in other areas so I plan to hire them for other home repair needs."

"I love dealing with owner operated businesses such as this one. My next door neighbors used this company last year to paint the outside of their home. We were impressed with the professionalism, quality and price point of their job, and so we called. Mauricio and his brother both responded punctually to my inquiry. Mauricio came by within 2 days, gave an estimate, brought a crew a few days later and completed the job. They worked quickly, neatly and most importantly did a fantastic reasonably job. Our home is a 1925 cedar shake Dutch Colonial. They scraped, primed and painted. Portions of the roof were tarped and no paint splattered anywhere on the roof surfaces. I would highly recommend this company to anyone who needs their services, which also include carpentry, patios, interior as well as exterior painting."

"As it happens, Wilber's Painting has skilled carpenters on staff who are competent, experienced, and committed to old world craftsmanship. Our good fortune was getting Maynor, a highly talented carpenter, who constructed and installed the door, which is quite attractive. The installation was tricky because the 90 year-old frame was not perfectly squared but he managed to get the right fit. Mahogany was used for the door frame and safety glass for the insert. I opted not to have a screen insert, so the glass is a permanent fixture."

"Monks Home Improvements are top notch, the workers are all meticulous to detail, they have very competitive prices and very professional services. I had very complex custom molding installed on a tray ceiling in my master bedroom as well as crown molding and chair rails with shadow box moldings on my staircase and living room, the crew headed up by Jose were just suburb in their precision and attention to detail with carpentry and painting, I would also like to give a shout out to Ward who setup the projects, and Jose and his fantastic team of carpenters and painters. If you want any type of carpentry or painting done Monks is the place to go. Will be doing more business with them in the near future."

"Replaced missing siding and painted foundation: Eric was very prompt in responding to my request for a quote. He came to my house on a Sunday to give me an estimate and was extremely flexible with working within my time frame. His price was very reasonable and fair. He would check in with me as the job progressed to review what had been done to ensure I was happy with the work. He and his team were very polite, friendly and eager to make sure we were pleased with the job. I would definitely use them again."

FAQs for carpentry projects in Westfield, NJ

The average cost to hire a woodworker for a project in your home is around $65 per hour, but hourly rates can range from $35 to $250 or more, depending on the experience and skill of the woodworker. Your total woodworking project cost will depend on the complexity of the work, the type of wood, the number of projects, and any other materials your project requires. You could hire a professional woodworker to create everything from a custom cabinet to ornate, unique staircases.

Generally, general contractors charge between $50 and $150 hourly, though not every contractor charges by the hour. If charging based on the project, you can expect a markup of 10% to 20% of the construction cost. You can expect to pay between $300 and $500 daily if charged by the day.

While city and state laws vary on general contractor licensing requirements, hiring an unlicensed general contractor could lead to poor quality work, costly future expenses, and potential code violations. Be sure to check our state licensing tool to review the local general contractor guidelines for your area.

As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:

  • The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check

  • Required to have applicable state and local licenses

  • Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review

  • Paying to advertise their services

  • Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi

Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.

Every woodworker has different skills and experience, so we recommend asking the following questions when hiring a woodworker for your project:

  • How long have you been in the woodworking industry?

  • What experience do you have with my type of project?

  • Do you have customer references I can speak with?

  • How long do you expect my project to take?

  • What is my recourse if I have an issue with your work?

  • Do you charge hourly or per project?

  • Will you work on-site or in your own workshop?

  • Does your fee include the necessary post-job clean-up?

While they perform similar tasks, a carpenter is responsible for the woodworking that goes into construction—like framing, installing sheathing, and hanging kitchen cabinets—while a woodworker tackles more intricate and custom projects—like building custom furniture and installing wainscoting. Based on these definitions, most woodworkers can tackle the jobs of a carpenter, but you should always ask about your specific project when choosing a woodworker to ensure they have the necessary skills to tackle the job.
