"We hired S&S Custom Decks to fix and complete deck repairs and under deck water drainage issues. We hired S&S Custom Decks because the original contractor “Competitive Contracting LLC failed at the job. Joe (S&S Custom Decks) had to completely replace the surface of the deck and tear out the drainage system and replace with a new system. Joe did an excellent job. He was very professional and did a great job communicating with us. When we discovered a small issue he was out promptly to fix the problem. We are going to have this company out next summer to do another job. One of the most important thing we want when dealing with a company is “communications” between them and us. Joe did just that. I would recommend S&S Custom Decks for for their outstanding support in getting our the job done."

Customers say: True professional

"I received a recommendation from a friend for Juan’s Painting. Juan’s Painting was reasonably priced, coming in cheapest out of 3 bids I received. He told me upfront what paint they would use, that they would power wash my whole house, and paint all of the trim, gutters, soffits, and fence. They taped & papered everything. They scraped, and repaired everything that was to be painted. They were prompt when showing up, worked as a team, and worked very quickly. When they were finished, you couldn’t tell that they had been here, except my house looked brand new! I would definitely hire them again! Thank you Juan’s Painting!"

"Awesome experience with this company from start to finish. Owners who scheduled and provided estimates were knowledgeable and informative. Painters were high quality and very respectful of our time and space. And owners returned following job to inspect work ensuring customer satisfaction. A few items were found that needed touch-up, and the company had painters come back out to correct at no expense to me. Great company! Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for professional painters."

"My experience with Tracy "Tray" Hollingsworth was tremendous. We hired Tray initially to do some backyard deck repairs and staining, and his quality of work and strong communications were so excellent that we hired him for some additional activities that centered on exterior painting and some handyman tasks. I look forward to working with Tray again - - he is the BEST!"

"This was not the cheapest quote for a retaining wall however owner took time to fully explain the specifics of job and was able to work with us to do work timely since we were dealing with water issues. Excellent work completed and wall looks great while solving our landscape issues. They also built a platform deck for our above ground pool to allow easy pool access. Again quality work completed as promised. Owner frequently on site during construction and was available if we had questions. Would use this company again."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Wood stains last anywhere from two to five years, depending on exposure to the elements, your local climate, the type of stain, and the surface it’s on. For instance, vertical surfaces last longer than horizontal surfaces. Some types of woods, like dense hardwoods, will require a recoat yearly, as they are too dense for the stain to absorb. In any event, apply a recoat every 2 to 4 years. As for storage, a can of unopened stain can last up to 5 years, though results may vary.

Satin paint is generally considered a better choice for woodwork—including trim, baseboards, cabinets, and doors—than flatter finishes like eggshell or matte. Its soft sheen enhances architectural details and stands up well to frequent cleaning and daily wear. Compared to eggshell and matte finishes, satin is more durable for high-touch areas because it is less porous and doesn't absorb dirt as easily. Matte finishes, in particular, are prone to scuffs and are harder to clean, making them less practical for surfaces like doors and cabinets.

The best paint for an older deck depends on the material and whether or not your deck already has a coat of paint. Generally, if your deck already has paint on it, you should choose the same type of paint when repainting the deck. For example, if an old deck has oil-based paint on it, stick with oil; if your deck has water-based paint, choose water-based paint.

Yes, you can and should paint or stain pressure-treated wood to help prevent the boards from cracking. However, you must wait for the wood to dry out completely before applying any finish. Freshly treated wood can take weeks or even months to dry; a common recommendation is to wait three to six months. To check if the wood is ready, perform a simple water test: drip some water onto the surface. If the water beads up, the wood is still too wet and needs more time to dry. If the wood absorbs the water, it is dry enough to be painted or stained. You can proceed with building your deck or fence while the wood is still wet, but you will need to wait to apply the paint or stain.

Ultimately, overapplication of stain can compromise the deck's appearance, durability, and longevity. It may result in an uneven finish, with excess stain pooling, dripping, or drying into thick patches. It can also obscure the wood's natural grain and texture, detracting from the desired aesthetic. Moreover, excessive staining may not fully penetrate the wood, leading to poor adhesion and premature wear. Additionally, thick layers of stain are prone to peeling, cracking, and blistering as they struggle to bond with the surface.
