"Joe and his staff are knowledgeable and polite. They clean up any mess while they are creating it and when the job is complete there is no mess. I am encouraged as they seem to understand the cause of my roofing leak and how to prevent any future leaks. Time will tell. Great work! Great value!"

"We are completely happy and pleased with the word done at our home by Tier 1 Home Solutions, LLC. The crew from Tier 1 did a fantastic job replacing our entire roof, and even went the second mile by helping us deal with some rotting issues that were discovered during their work with us. We were not only pleased with the roof replacement, we can't say enough about the clean-up job done by Tier 1 after the roof replacement. Sometimes contractors don't do a great job cleaning up around the home after work has been done, but Tier 1 made sure everything around the house was cleaned up and neat before they departed. We highly recommend the Tier 1 Home Solutions company, and we are grateful for the roofing work they completed for us. It feels great to have a brand new quality roof that looks just great!"

"Had the pleasure of hiring Vail-Syde Construction to replace 28 windows and a double door at our home. From all the contractors we had out to quote the job, he stood out the most with his knowledge. Our home is 37 years old and so were the windows. From start to finish, the job took only two days! We didn't feel overwhelmed during the project and it didn't take weeks to complete. Ruston, one of the owners was on site daily to oversee the project/ answer any questions I had. Very thankful to find this company and their workers!"

Roofing questions, answered by experts

No, there’s no specific building code that requires a roof overhang. However, installing your roof with the standard 2-inch overhang is good practice, as it helps direct runoff away from your fascia boards and roof decking and into your gutters. Some overhang is especially important in areas that see heavy rainfall and snowfall, as the risk of water getting under the roofing material and causing water damage is much higher.

If you’re building the roof trusses yourself, which isn’t recommended, it will be more affordable than buying pre-built trusses. Trusses cost more because they use the same amount of material, but you’ll also be paying for the labor, as well as the delivery to your home. However, if you’re having a contractor build the roof for you, then trusses will be less expensive, as the labor costs to build roof framing on-site will cost more.

The least suitable roof for solar panels is a wood shake roof. An electrical mishap with your solar panels could start a fire on the roof, so some areas don’t allow solar panels on wood roofs. You don’t have to let a wood roof stop you from going solar. You can replace your wood shakes with shingles. Installing the panels on the ground is another option.

There are several pros and cons of flat roofs. One disadvantage of flat roofs is that you lose potential attic space because it's flat. Flat roofs tend to pool water and because they lack an angle, any leak in the roof—usually due to a bad seal—has the potential to let in a lot of water. They don’t work well in climates with snow. Flat roofs are also structurally weaker than sloped roofs.

The lifespan of asphalt shingles is typically between 15 and 30 years, depending on the type of shingle and other factors. Standard 3-tab shingles have the shortest lifespan, around 10 to 15 years. Architectural shingles last longer, averaging 20 to 25 years. Luxury or designer asphalt shingles are the most durable, with a lifespan of 40 years or more. Climate, installation quality, and regular maintenance also play a significant role in how long your shingles will last. Signs that they need replacement include granule loss, bald spots, and roof leaks.
