"I got six estimates for replacement of my 12-year-old water heater. I went with Advanced Water Systems of Coastal NC-VA. I’m extremely happy with the purchase and installation of my new water heater. Advanced Water Systems of Coastal NC-VA impressed me at every step of the process. They provided a fair estimate, professional communication and installation, answered all my questions during the process, and cleaned up after they were done. The installation team installed a new gas shut off valve and an expansion tank, in addition to the water heater, and didn’t add on extra charges like some companies. They also insulated the pipes. I’m thankful that everything is now up to code. The plumber explained the purpose of the expansion tank, other companies didn’t even mention one. Water softener versus water filter: which one should you choose? If you want to remove minerals, opt for a softener. If you want to remove a wide range of contaminants, go for a filter. Or, you can install both.

Experts recommend that you put two to four bags of potassium chloride in your water softener every month. This amount depends on how much is in the bag (40 pounds is most common) and what your water softener manufacturer recommends. For more specific advice, talk to a water softener pro in your area and read the manual that came with your system.

Whether or not your water softener installation requires a permit depends on where you live; some municipalities only let certified plumbers and electricians pull the necessary permits and complete the work, others only require a professional to sign off on the work, and some don’t mandate permits at all. You can contact your local building department to find out, but you can also ask a local water softener installer or plumber to see if a permit is necessary. They will usually pull the permits for you and can help close them out after the work is complete.

Water softener life spans range from 10 to 25 years, with most lasting around 15 years on average. After the 10-year mark, you may see your softener’s performance diminish as it progresses in age. Proper water softener maintenance can impact how long your water softener lasts. Likewise, a home with very hard water or a high demand will put more demand on your softener, which in turn shortens its life span.

You can use a commercial water repellent treatment for glass on your shower doors to prevent water spots. Take care to only apply the product to glass. Letting air circulate also helps prevent water spots, as water is less likely to remain on the glass for a long time with good air circulation. Run your vent fan, open a window, and leave the shower door open for about half an hour after using the shower.
