The best way to heat a swimming pool depends on your pool and location. Those living in sunny environments may find that a solar-powered heater works just fine, but you may need something more reliable, like a gas or electric heater if it’s often cloudy where you live. Evaporation causes up to 70% of outdoor pools’ energy losses, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. While you can’t completely prevent evaporation, different types of pool covers can help a lot. Pool enclosures, however, don’t do much to stop evaporation—and the cost to build a pool enclosure likely won’t tempt you to try.

A retaining wall can only function as a fence if it’s high enough on all sides to prevent someone from accidentally falling into the pool. However, most retaining walls retain dirt, which means their purpose is not related to safety. There would need to be nothing on the other side of the wall for it to be considered a fence, but in that case, it wouldn’t retain anything and would cease to be a retaining wall.  

If a pool enclosure will cut down on your to-do list and encourage you to throw more pool parties, then it is often worth the cost. They can cut down on monthly pool maintenance, extend your swimming season, and even make the poolscape safer. Some more permanent pool enclosures can even work in tandem with your heater to keep your pool warm. 

Depending on your budget, wants, and needs, a pool enclosure can be a worthwhile investment. It all comes down to how much you use your pool, and what it would mean to you to have year-round access to it.

If you know that you'll swim in your pool a lot, then having an enclosure means you don't have to worry about the weather. It's also a lot easier to maintain the water, because you don't have to deal with leaves falling into the pool, and the water's chemical levels tend to be more stable.
