That’s two hours of my life! Total frustration. They’re smart enough to send an email checklist to make sure I was prepared with my phone to have the battery changed. "Customer service was awlful from the Hazelwood nc office. I was trying to get issue with ge ice machine repaired. They came and fixed the water not dispensing fixed that but said I needed a heater. Long story short I called repeatedly but calls were not returned. Finally got fed up and called someone else. Service call was 112.00 with work not completed. My fault I shouldn't have paid until issue was repaired"

Most microwaves last for around eight years; lower-end units may last as few as five, while higher-end microwaves could continue to work for ten or more years. A few factors will affect the lifespan of your small appliance:

  • How many people in your home use the appliance

  • How often you use the microwave

  • Brand and quality

  • Whether or not you maintain it properly

  • Style of microwave

  • Professional or DIY installation

The most obvious sign that it’s time to repair or replace your microwave is that it is no longer heating food. If you notice your food coming out cold or not as warm as it used to, call a small appliance repair technician for help. 

Some other signs your microwave is in need of service include:

  • It’s making strange noises during operation.

  • The interior plate no longer spins.

  • You notice strange smells or see smoke.

  • It’s close to or more than eight years old.

You should deep-clean your dishwasher every month for optimal performance. A simple scrub down using a homemade vinegar liquid solution is all you need, but don’t use cleaners that aren’t for dishwashers. 

If your dishwasher needs repair, expect to spend between $50 and $100 or $100 to $200 per hour to hire a dishwasher repair technician to service your machine.

Treat hard water with water treatment tablets to keep your dishes from getting spotty in between washes. Drop one of these into your dishwasher monthly and run a basic cycle with the machine empty.

A decade plus of normal wear and tear combined with heavy cookware usage are the most common reasons glass stove tops break. The glass can also break from sudden temperature changes, including dramatic shifts in the local climate. Manufacturer defects and poor quality control are rarer causes of cracks, but they do occur.

When considering how to dispose of other appliances, a landfill is also usually not an option. The biggest difference is that electrical appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, or dishwashers aren’t as easy to transport as a portable microwave. Some local councils offer bulky uplift services (although a fee may apply), scrap metal recyclers might pick yours up, trade-in options on big items are more common, and some utility companies offer incentivized recycling programs.
