"They contacted us from angie's list first so we hired them to clean out our septic tank. Long story short the tank was in bad shape and had to be replaced. We had to put the new tank in a different spot because it needed to be up to code. They quoted us a very good price and my husband specifically asked about possible overages. They said there would be none. The job turned out to be very complicated and they spent more time and used more resources than they expected. They charged us exactly what they said they would. They were outstanding!"

Sewer Cleaning questions, answered by experts

The average cost to snake your main sewer line is around $250 for a simple snake. Most sewer line specialists charge between $45 and $200 per hour for main sewer line snaking, so the time involved plays a major role. The price you’ll pay will depend on the severity of the clog, the item causing the backup, how long it takes to remove the item, and more. A more severe issue that requires unclogging a main sewer line will cost $3,100 on average.

Unlike regular cleanings, snaking your sewer line should be done as needed. There’s no reason to snake your sewer line if you don’t have any noticeable issues, like slow drainage or plugged drains. You can add it to your regular sewer cleaning checklist as a prevention method (on the same 18- to 22-month schedule), but it’s not always necessary.

There are many things that could cause your basement floor drain to back up. One significant cause of a drainage backup is flushing non-flushable items, such as wipes, paper towels, and facial tissue. Other causes of a backed-up basement floor drain include tree roots impeding the drain pipe or an accumulation of hair, oil, and grease.

If methods like hot water or a plunger don’t work on your clogged drain, you can snake your drain to dislodge the plug. This can be a messy process, taking some physical effort and additional time over the other drain-clearing options. You can purchase a drain snake at a hardware store and choose from handheld options or those attached to a drill. Just work slowly, and be ready to call a plumber if you’re unable to reach the clog from your drain or P-trap.

Outdoor plumbing issues are no less serious or urgent to fix than interior plumbing problems. These problems may require excavation and lawn repair due to the plumbing often being buried underground. The most common outside plumbing problems include:

  • Clogged landscape drainage: $200–$1,000

  • Clogged sewer lines: $60–$250 per linear foot

  • Corroded or rusted pipes: $1,500–$15,000+

  • Leaking drain lines: $200–$1,000

  • Leaking water mains: $300–$4,000+

  • Septic system failure: $600–$3,000+

  • Tree roots in pipes: $200–$1,000

  • Well pump failure: $350–$1,500
