"Samuel was very thorough and did a great job! I didn’t get a good report but I would definitely hire him again. I talked with him today and he was so kind as he was Saturday. Great young man!"

"Troy Galloway did an awesome job inspecting our new home. He provided us with a very thorough report and was even available for multiple follow-up questions. On top of that, he was by far the most affordable of the quotes I received. He was such a pleasure to deal with throughout the entire process. Highly recommend."

Small jobs welcome

"Jacob was pleasant to work with. We had a rehab project; the foundation of the place had some issues instead of charging us for the entire project upfront (structural inspection report and drawings). Jacob provided great insights, including a structural inspection report; this enabled us to engage with foundation contractors to get estimates for the needed repairs and evaluate if the repair costs made sense to continue with the project or not. If it does not, no worries; if we want to move forward, he will come back to measure and do the drawings. This helped us out big time."

"Needed basement/crack repair. We had water coming in the walls and from the floor of our finished basement. This company was timely in scheduling the initial inspection, prompt in e-mailing an estimate, and had the lowest estimate out of two we obtained. They showed up as scheduled, worked hard and were very professional. After the work was initially completed, we experienced a small "weeping" problem with the French drain system. They promptly came back out and made adjustments to the slope of the drain at no further cost. Six months, and several very heavy rains later, our basement remains completely dry. Highly recommend this company."

"Tim and his crew at Triton Exteriors are awesome! My roof was damaged by a large tree branch during a storm at the end of June. I had used Triton for a roof inspection a few years earlier and was impressed. I got three bids from roofing companies and selected Triton even though they weren’t the cheapest. Tim came out to meet me when my insurance adjuster was here. He was able to persuade him to include more money for damages to the interior and the basement. Even though the insurance company only paid for the back slope to be replaced, I elected to have the entire roof replaced with the architectural shingles. Tim met with me to review shingle colors, and also arranged for Marshall to repair the interior damage. He was at my house when the roofers were here, and had excellent follow-through to make sure I was happy. I whole-heartedly recommend Triton."

"They advocated for me with my Home Insurance to get it covered. They did an excellent, professional job and finished in one day. Any time I contacted them they responded the same day. The roof looks great! I am picky and not easily impressed, but I was 100 % satisfied and impressed with ASHE & WINKLER RESTORATION !"

"We had a new roof and gutters installed. From the first contact it was a stellar experience. Mark answered many questions his first visit and even looked in the attic to assess the roof from underneath. We had a 30 yr old shingles over the original 20 yr old roof; 2 layers. He quickly came back with the quote, showed us the products and explained what new innovations have occurred since our last install. Had financing options for us to look at and all his preparation led us to using his company. The loan only took 5 minutes to approve. The crew was fabulous and the cleanup was exceptional. The same can be said for the gutter guys. And Mark was here to oversee that things were going well. He wants to do business with you. Overall his company deserves a 10 star rating!"

Home Inspection questions, answered by experts

Modular homes can go up or down in value depending on a few factors. In areas where real estate is appreciating, the value of modular homes is likely to increase, and vice versa. Additionally, the value of modular homes depends partially on the area. In cities where every other home is stick-built, modular homes might be considered a functional obsolescence, in which case they could be less desirable and go down in value. In either case, though, modular homes can still be a good investment, especially since they provide housing at a lower upfront cost.

Closing out an open building permit requires that you have your professional schedule a final inspection of the work they completed. In some cases, like a roof replacement or solar installation, a building inspector from your local municipality may just carry out a drive-by inspection. In other cases, like new construction or a change to interior plumbing or electrical work, the inspector might need to gain access to your home to confirm that the work was done in accordance with the local building code.

To determine if you’re being overcharged, request an itemized price breakdown of the project. Check for hidden fees or project expenses, from parts to labor, that are clearly overpriced. However, the easiest way to know if a contractor is overcharging you is by getting an estimate for the same project from another professional. Negotiating with a contractor if you have another bid for a lower price is possible.

Part of a pre-drywall inspector’s job is ensuring all work done on the home is up to code. If they discover anything that doesn’t comply, these fixes may be required by the local government or by the lender financing the build. Aside from these mandatory post-inspection home repairs, it’s technically optional to make any other repairs—though it’s a good idea to remain proactive about them to avoid a bigger issue in the future.

Technically, you can do a home inspection yourself. Still, it is not recommended unless you or someone you know has a background in the construction trades to be able to identify any issues. A certified home inspector is trained and has the experience necessary to make a thorough and trustworthy assessment of the condition of a home. If you need a home inspection when buying and selling a home, a professional home inspector is often required.
