Customers say: Super punctual

"We needed a new driveway as our old one was chipped and cracked in so many places and water was seeping into our basement after each heavy rainstorm. Crosstown Concrete came out and dug up our old cement driveway and poured a new one with new steps for our side entrance. We were so impressed by the knowledge, professionalism and courtesy of Greg's entire team. They were AMAZING! They worked tirelessly for days in the heat until the job was completed. His employees are the hardest working crew around! Our new driveway looks incredible and adds so much to our curb appeal. I will absolutely hire his team again for future work. I can't say enough great things about them!"

"When Wayne came to give us an estimate, there was a crevice between the end of the garage floor and the driveway. Wayne said the crevice was caused by the salt from the cars eating away the cinder block foundation below the garage floor. The issue was fixed with concrete before the driveway installation. So not only did we get a new driveway, but we fixed a previously undiagnosed problem. In addition, the crew did a good job of cleaning up the street before they left the premises."

"L & R was great to work with!  We were having the front steps and yard torn up and re-done right before Halloween and we  were concerned that this would be a problem for kids in the neighborhood.  L & R promised to have the steps done by Halloween and they not only had that done but the driveway was also set  in time for Halloween.  We had an awesome crew that did FINE work and were so kind and courteous.   They also made sure at the end of the day all was picked up.  When it was garbage and recycling pickup day, they even brought up the containers from the street at the end of their work day!!  Our project ran right up to the sudden cold/snow and L & R has promised to come back in the spring and make sure the sprinkler heads are all running appropriately, etc.   All staff were easy to work with and very responsive to questions or concerns.   We would highly recommend L & R.

"Chris was professional, friendly and easy to deal with. Even though he hadn't installed any permeable driveways, he had installed permeable patios and didn't see any problems with doing something similar with my small driveway. He even suggested some options for reusing the water. I would have accepted Chris' proposal but I found someone who installed permeable driveways using recycled material which is what I initially wanted and was having a hard time finding.

"Jessica and her team completed our project in 1.5 days which is what she initially said it would be. They worked extremely hard morning until late afternoon. Clean up was terrific! You couldn’t even tell someone had worked on our driveway. We enjoyed the bees and butterflies visiting our new plants/shrubs all summer! Many thanks to Jessica and her team at Better Yards and Gardens!"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Whether it's worth it to install a heated driveway depends on how often you'll use it, your lifestyle, and your budget. If you live in a mild climate with little snowfall, then installing a built-in heated driveway system may not be worth it. If you live in a region that experiences mild snowfall, then a portable mat could work better. However, if you live in a region with heavy snowfall, it makes sense to invest in a built-in heated driveway.

Several materials are suitable for steep driveways. Gravel and crushed stone are affordable options that provide good traction. Permeable pavers—such as plastic, rubber, or concrete—filled with gravel or crushed stones are also excellent, as they allow water to drain without causing erosion and perform well in ice and snow. Another option is resin, which can be coated with an anti-slip finish and helps prevent puddles. For added stability, you can install a retaining wall to prevent pavers and gravel from shifting over time.

In most cases, you don’t need a permit to repave your driveway, although some exceptions exist. If you’re widening your driveway and plan on widening the apron as well, you’ll usually need a permit from the Department of Transportation in your area. This permit costs between $50 and $300 in most cases. Most municipalities will also require a certified and insured contractor do the work relating to the apron and curb cut. You can contact your building department or ask your paving company if you need a permit. Your driveway professional will usually pull the permit for you.

A driveway's lifespan varies by material. Asphalt driveways typically last 15 to 30 years, while concrete driveways last longer, between 20 and 50 years. The longevity of any driveway is affected by factors like extreme temperatures, heavy traffic, and the quality of maintenance. Regular upkeep, such as filling cracks, resealing the surface, and ensuring proper drainage, can help extend its life. For gravel driveways, regrading to fill in uneven areas every year or two is recommended.

At a depth of two inches, a ton of asphalt covers around 80 to 100 square feet. However, the thicker the asphalt, the less surface area it will cover. That’s why measuring correctly is essential when estimating asphalt needs and costs to ensure you get enough material to cover your entire driveway, patio, or other asphalt surface.
