"Luke completed two projects for us. He tiled a front entry floor and created a more pleasing front porch design by building out an existing post and covering it with stone to match stone on the front of the house. Both projects were completed in a timely fashion. He takes time to listen to customers, his work is exacting and carefully completed. His rates are reasonable. Both projects turned out beautifully! Thanks Luke!"

"Robert was by far the most responsive and fairly priced mason who bid on our job. I couldn't believe how responsive he was. It was too bad he couldn't fit in our work in our renovation schedule (the work needs to cure 30 days before paint). Otherwise I'm sure I'd be writing a very happy 'completion' review."

"I had no idea the work had been done for about 3 days (I enter through the garage). They had come out, raised the sidewalk, and cleaned up while I was at work. Looks good and was done quickly."

"We asked Clark Companies to remove an old timber wall and replace it with blocks. It was an extensive and challenging project of a two-tiered wall with steps. We are so pleased with the creative and beautiful results. The quality construction team worked diligently together for long hours. We were impressed with the quality of their work, with their politeness, and with their character. They were always willing to explain their procedures and answer our questions."

"Our project was actually a crawlspace encapsulation. We have a lake cabin that was built in the 1960's. It had a dirt floor in the crawlspace with bare block masonry foundation walls. It also had old, damp batt insulation that was falling down from the joist spaces. American Waterworks came in, removed the old insulation (a nasty job!), laid down a 2 layer moisture barrier system and spray foamed the foundation walls and rim joist area. I can't believe what a difference this has made to our air quality, much warmer floors. We used to have to wipe down the windows every morning during the winter because of condensation. Not any more! I would highly recommend this company if you have the same needs!!"

"Tear out crew did a nice job of removing old driveway and grading to level. Paving crew was no nonsense and very professional. Only way we could be more pleased is if someone else paid for it."

"Grant and Mark came out and raised my front steps by about 4” in back and 2” in front and then raised the areas around it so that there was a smooth transition once again. The area looks incredible and they had some clever ways to make their footprint invisible to the passerby. I’m more than happy with the outcome! Thanks guys!!!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Yes, concrete is significantly stronger than masonry, especially if the concrete pour includes reinforcements, like steel rebar. Concrete is a uniform material that can withstand compression, sheer force, and tensile force as long as it’s reinforced. Masonry involves the use of mortar or grout to connect individual building materials, like brick, stone, or tile. Mortar and grout are also reasonably strong and resist compression well, but they don’t come close to the strength of poured concrete.

Use fire bricks for a brick pizza oven. These bricks are typically used for fireplaces and chimneys as they can withstand high temperatures from heat sources. If you attempt to use any other kind of bricks, it’s likely that this material will crack from such high heat exposure in the best case—and potentially explode and cause serious harm in the worst case.

When painting brick, each application method has distinct advantages and disadvantages. Spraying is significantly faster but may not penetrate deeply beyond the surface layer. Rolling is effective for working paint into the brick's texture but can be less effective on mortar joints. If you opt for a roller, choose a thick nap of at least a half-inch to ensure paint gets into all the crevices for even coverage. Using a brush is generally not recommended as it is very time-consuming and provides poor surface penetration. Ultimately, a combination of spraying followed by back-rolling is often the best strategy for a durable and even finish.

Two types of masonry are veneer masonry and solid masonry. Veneer masonry is thin brick or stone material attached to the face of a building. With veneer masonry, the walls support the weight of the masonry products rather than the masonry being built on a concrete footing. Solid masonry is a wall or other brick or stone structure built on a concrete footing, and the masonry supports itself.

Not all cracks in brick indicate foundation problems. For instance, small hairline cracks can occur as a new construction settles. However, larger cracks are often a sign of a more severe issue. Indicators of a potential foundation problem include long horizontal cracks, "stair-step" cracks, vertical cracks that appear indoors, or any crack that widens at the top. Other signs of structural damage to look for are uneven floors and doors or windows that stick. These issues could be caused by problems with the soil beneath the home or an overgrown tree.
