"I loved working with these guys and they did an excellent job. I hired them to rebuild the brick in front of my garage as well as install a sidewalk and apron. During the middle of the project we added a small stamped concrete patio. All work was professionally done. The work was clearly explained as to why they did things certain ways and the had very good communication. They were very prompt each day. I would use them again and they earned a strong recommendation from me."

"The new walls and steps are beautiful and functional.  Goodfellows gave us a good analysis of the project and a good explanation of our choices.  We scheduled an early season installation to minimize stress to a mature garden.  The first day, Goodfellows moved and stored already-growing perennials, demolished both walls and rebuilt the upper wall.  Then it rained for days.  When Goodfellows was able to return five days later, the crew built two sets of steps and the lower wall and cleaned up the site in just two days.  They had cleaned up as they worked, and left the site in very good condition.  The day after the walls were completed, we were able to replant the terrace gardens."

"Robert was by far the most responsive and fairly priced mason who bid on our job. I couldn't believe how responsive he was. It was too bad he couldn't fit in our work in our renovation schedule (the work needs to cure 30 days before paint). Otherwise I'm sure I'd be writing a very happy 'completion' review."

Customers say: True professional

"From receiving the Quote to completion of this project, Absolute Masonry was exceptionally professional, on time, and met our expectations. This family-owned business was so friendly and easy to communicate scheduling the lead time to complete the project. They made us feel our small project was a priority to complete on time. I would definitely recommend their services to anyone needing masonry work large or small. We were very satisfied reviewing the before & after pictures taken by the construction team."

Customers say: Quick response

"Dan and his coworker came in last minute and knocked my request out of the park! Not only was he priced fairly, he completed the work virtually same day! Although the project was small (fixing some grout on the exterior brickwork on my attached garage), Dan was passionate about explaining what he was doing. He even showed up the day after to put some finishing ‘polish’ on the job. I definitely recommend Dan Stanton Masonry."

"These guys are top notch. Shawn and Tyler poured and finished our front sidewalk in an afternoon and did a fantastic job. Crystal and Shawn were super communicative and helpful while navigating this process and I will absolutely be calling them up for any additional concrete work I will have in the future!"

"I needed a 3.5' x 3.5' concrete pad poured for a elevator AC condenser installation and I needed it done very quickly based on my tight installation schedule. Alfredo of Bravos Advanced Flatwork was extremely responsive and communicative- he responded to my bid request within an hour, worked with me that day on some unique design specifications, including a late change I needed to make to the size later in the day AND he completed the job the very next morning. Alfredo was a good communicator and very punctual, even letting me know when he had a very minor arrival delay. Most importantly, Alfredo's work was excellent quality. I would recommend Alfredo and Bravos Advanced Flatwork for your concrete needs!!"

"Our project was actually a crawlspace encapsulation. We have a lake cabin that was built in the 1960's. It had a dirt floor in the crawlspace with bare block masonry foundation walls. It also had old, damp batt insulation that was falling down from the joist spaces. American Waterworks came in, removed the old insulation (a nasty job!), laid down a 2 layer moisture barrier system and spray foamed the foundation walls and rim joist area. I can't believe what a difference this has made to our air quality, much warmer floors. We used to have to wipe down the windows every morning during the winter because of condensation. Not any more! I would highly recommend this company if you have the same needs!!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Brick spalling—which refers to the crumbly, flaky, or pitted appearance that can develop over time—is caused by a few different conditions. These include:

  • Climates with constant freeze-thaw cycles

  • Use of non-breathable sealants

  • High-pressure water cleaning

  • Improper installation

While you can’t do anything about the weather, you can preserve your bricks by cleaning them with soapy water and a good old-fashioned scrubbing. Pressure washers may be satisfying to use, but they can eventually wear away the surface of your bricks. If you don’t have advanced-level DIY skills in masonry, you can hire a reputable masonry contractor in your area for your project.

Limewash can be removed from brick, but the method of removal will depend on how long the limewash has been on the brick. If the limewash has fully dried—which happens after about five days—you’ll need to use a diluted muriatic acid mixture to remove it. If there are multiple coats of limewash, you may need to apply the acid mixture several times to fully remove it from the brick.

You may not need a hammer drill if you’re planning on drilling one or two very small diameter holes in brick. For holes with a diameter of 3/16-inch or less, a regular drill with a masonry bit can do the job. However, the bit will heat up quickly, and the process will take significantly longer than with a hammer drill. Prepare to cool your drill bit down in a bucket of water more often.

Use fire bricks for a brick pizza oven. These bricks are typically used for fireplaces and chimneys as they can withstand high temperatures from heat sources. If you attempt to use any other kind of bricks, it’s likely that this material will crack from such high heat exposure in the best case—and potentially explode and cause serious harm in the worst case.

Yes, you can technically use a pressure washer to remove paint from brick, but it comes with a significant risk of damaging the brick surface. A high-power pressure washer can be fast but may leave the brick looking unsightly. The recommended method is to first apply a chemical paint stripper, following the product's instructions, and then use a stiff metal bristle brush or a pressure washer on a low-pressure setting to remove the loosened paint. Due to the risk of damage, it is often best to hire a professional who can use low-stress methods.
