"I was having trouble with my Nest thermostat sending a call to my furnace for heat. Greg called the morning of service to let me know his tech, Will, would be arriving in the later portion of the two-hour window, which was much appreciated. Will arrived within the allotted two-hour window and helped me figure out the issue. I installed the Nest myself and ran a new 5-wire thermostat wire to replace the old 4-wire that didn't have a "Common" wire in it, so I was concerned that I had done something wrong. Will checked it all out, verified that I had properly installed the equipment and that it was working properly, and figured out that there was a setting on the fan scheduling that was causing the heat not to come on if the fan was off. He did a quick inspection of my furnace to make sure there were no other culprits and he got it up and running properly again. He answered all of my questions and explained several different maintenance tips to me. He told me about their maintenance plan, which has several benefits on top of the two semi-annual equipment check-ups, for only $2 more than the cost of just the two equipment check-ups. When they come back out in the spring for my A/C check-up, I'm definitely signing up for the maintenance plan. Also, Will recommended Honeywell's touch screen thermostat over the Nest, for anyone looking for a "smart" thermostat. In short, I'd highly recommend using HVAC Comfort Inc. for any of your heating and/or cooling issues. Thanks Greg and Will!"

"Steven was incredibly helpful, taking the time to not only fix the issue, but to explain what the problem was, and giving me suggestions for preventative measures to ensure my home is taken care of. After my experience with Harriman’s, there’s only one number I’ll be calling from now on for anything HVAC related! Thank you for everything"

Small jobs welcome

"Excellent service! I had hired this company a couple of years ago and was impressed with them then as I am now. They are the only company I will hire to clean my ducts! I noticed an immediate change in the air quality after they finished cleaning my ducts. They are very professional and thorough. The owner Bill showed me before and after photos. I couldn't believe the difference! The cost is very reasonable and the turn around time from initial call to day of appointment is exceptional. I will definitely call them every year for my air duct cleaning."

"This company went above and beyond. From the estimate to the install of both a new furnace and air conditioning unit quickly after the estimate. We had been without heat for 4 days in December in Michigan. Glad to sleep in a home with heat again."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

The average life span of an HVAC system is 15 to 20 years. Even if your old air conditioner is still functional, it isn't as energy-efficient as a newer system (especially one with an Energy Star designation). Older HVAC systems aren't as efficient, and the 10-year mark is when you should start making full system replacement plans. Twenty years in, that plan should be well underway rather than waiting for the unit to die.

The compressor is the heart of your AC system and is one of the most important parts required to keep it functioning properly. If your AC unit is making a popping, banging, clanging, clicking, or screeching sound, it could point to a problem with the compressor. If the unit is physically vibrating, that can also be an indication that your AC compressor is going bad.

You need to know the square footage of your home first. Multiply that number by 20, which will get you the BTUs (British Thermal Units) needed to cool your home efficiently. Homes up to 1,000 square feet usually need a 1.5-ton unit; homes 1,000 to 1,200 square feet usually need a 1.75-ton unit, and homes 1,200 to 1,400 square feet usually need a 1.9-ton unit. Talk to a local pro for more specific advice on your home.

The cost of annual maintenance depends on the type of HVAC system you have. AC service typically costs an average of $200 but ranges from $100 to $550. If your system needs repairs, the price will vary significantly depending on what needs fixing. However, addressing the issues as they arise can prevent further damage to your unit and keep it operating efficiently for much longer.

No, it's not safe to keep using your unit when it's frozen. Not only can running a frozen unit lead to damage, but it can also potentially overheat, making it a fire hazard. Therefore, it's always best to turn off the AC unit as soon as you notice any ice.
