"Schutz was fantastic. They contacted my tenants to schedule an appointment, came the same day, and fixed the problem at a reasonable price. My furnace is getting older and I fully intend to hire Schutz to replace my furnace next year."

Small jobs welcome

"Arrived an hour after the appointed time, but did call to let me know of the delay.

Immediately assessed how to best approach our HVAC system with their equipment and repositioned the truck from the driveway to a side street to shorten the distance from the vacuum to the ductwork.  Were very methodical in their approach to their task and asked permission to proceed.  Equipment (hoses, etc.) was moved to assure that furnishings were untouched and any debris was immediately cleaned up.  The equipment used (truck, vacuum, compressor, hoses, agitators, etc.) was top-notch.  Cameras and air flow gauges were equal to the tasks.

Were very thorough and informative.  Businesslike, yet friendly approach to conversation.

Each cold air return was cleaned with compressed air.  Each heating/cooling duct was blasted with compressed air, agitated with a multi-flailed whip, blasted again with compressed air and the resultant dust was drawn into the main ductwork and into the vacuum hose.  Holes made to accommodate the hoses were capped with plastic plugs that fit very snugly and the large holes in the cold and hot main ductwork created for the vacuum were capped by prefabbed plates that were placed and fastened with screws into the ducts.

Furnace, as well as air conditioning coils, were thoroughly cleaned, as was the dryer vent.

Overall, about 3.5 hours and a very, very clean system.  Great job - would recommend to anyone."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Yes, it is possible. An electrical fire can break out if the compressor has inadequate ventilation. When it overheats but doesn't have a proper thermal cutout, this can cause the motor to short-circuit and catch fire. This risk is exacerbated if flammable materials, like dust and fallen leaves, are clogging the unit. The compressor overheating won't start a fire by itself, but poor maintenance and installation can increase the risk once it hits its breaking point and short-circuits.

On average, an AC unit lasts between 10 and 20 years. However, the specific lifespan depends on the type of unit, how often it's used, the local climate, and the quality of maintenance. Central AC units typically last 12 to 17 years, while window units have a shorter lifespan of 8 to 10 years. Portable AC units last about 5 to 10 years, and ductless mini-split systems can last up to 20 years. To extend the life of your AC unit, it's important to perform regular maintenance, such as replacing filters, cleaning coils, and scheduling annual professional tune-ups.

No, heat pump maintenance needs are very similar to air conditioners, including keeping outdoor units clean, changing filters regularly, and occasionally scheduling a refrigerant check to see if any has leaked out. Heat pumps typically switch automatically between heating and cooling, so you don’t need to worry about manually changing them every season. However, since they are always on call, they can develop wear and tear faster than an air conditioner.

While many states do not have specific licensing requirements for HVAC companies, your local city or county might. It's always a good idea to check local requirements online and use a tool like Angi’s contractor license lookup to confirm that the company you’re considering is licensed. Regardless of licensing, you should always ensure the company you hire is fully insured to avoid potential lawsuits if a technician is injured on your property. Additionally, it is recommended to check if the company holds third-party certifications, such as North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certification or R-410A certification, which qualifies them to work with HVAC refrigerants.

Deciding whether to replace just the AC coil or the entire system depends on the age of your unit and the overall cost. Replacing a coil is less expensive than a full system replacement, but it can still be a pricey repair. If your HVAC system is relatively new and still under warranty, or if the replacement cost is significantly lower than a new system, replacing the coil can be a worthwhile investment that restores efficiency and extends the unit's life. However, for older systems (nearing the end of their 10-15 year lifespan) or those with extensive damage, it is often more cost-effective to replace the entire AC unit. Mismatched coils in an older system can lead to inefficiency and future breakdowns, so a full replacement ensures optimal performance and avoids further costly repairs.
