"About 100 l.f. of cedar picket fence was removed and replaced. The work was quoted promptly with an estimated start date. All questions were answered promptly. We were emailed and called prior to the work starting. The crew was professional and neat. The work took two days; one to remove the old fence and install new posts and one to install the fence. The crew was easy to work with and offered suggestions for solving little issues. They even put up a temporary fence for the dog. The old fence was hauled away. The area was cleaned when work was complete. We are very happy with the new fence. This was the most pleasant experience we’ve ever had with a contractor. I highly recommend Defence Enterprises."

"It went great. Mike Jardine and the MHI team were cost competitive, attentive to details, pleasant, very responsive and communicative. They went above and beyond in the work. The wood trim on our home has some aged charm which incorporates vertical cuts in portions of the board. MHI replicated this appearance. A small touch which could have been avoided were attention to details overlooked. They also built us a new flower box as an "add on" at no additional cost to original quotation. We found the experience to be very positive, fast, and professional. We will definitely work with MHI again if the opportunity presents itself."

"We recently bought a home that had foreclosed. The previous owners had stopped taking care of the house for a long time. It has a large paver walk way and stairs to the front door as well as a walk way to the back yard. The pavers were sinking in areas, weeds were growing between them and some were loose.
Nosh made them look like they were brand new. The improvement is truly amazing! He fit us into his schedule immediately. Nosh doesn't skimp on materials and uses the highest quality product. He is prompt, thoughtful and generous. Nosh is very fair with his price and stands behind his work.

"The project went really well, and I couldn't be happier. Just as I requested, the new railing looks exactly like the old railing. There were some issues with installing it into the existing concrete steps, and Rick Gleason found a solution that really worked well. The new railing is sturdy and looks great."

"They blowed cellulose insulation inside the walls and on top of the attic.  They also put knee wall insulation in the attic and foam insulation on the rim joist in the basement, where accessible.  The guys answered all my questions.  Charles submitted the paperworks for the Consumers Energy rebates for me.  I am very happy with the work.

Fencing questions, answered by experts

Corrugated metal is a strong, long-lasting material. A corrugated metal fence will typically last several decades, and the metal panels themselves may last for 40 to 60 years. The main thing you should be concerned about is the fence posts. Wood fence posts will last about five years if you purchase them untreated or about 15 years if you treat them after installation. Keep an eye on your posts and look out for insect damage and rot.

If 20% or more of your fence is damaged, pros will often tell you that it’s a better use of your money to replace the fence entirely. Severe rotting and insect damage always call for a replacement. However, if you’re just dealing with a few loose posts or a little bit of mildew growth, you can repair the fence.

Green branches are more flexible and easier to work with, but they'll shrink as they dry, which can loosen your fence weave over time—so you'll need to weave them extra tight to account for shrinkage. Some species, particularly willow, may also try to sprout when used green. For these reasons, it’s typically easiest to use branches that have dried for a week or two.

You can use pressure-treated wood for a horizontal fence, but you’ll need to purchase a thicker and higher-quality variety to ensure it doesn’t sag or warp after you install it. Use #2 pine grade lumber and boards and thicker dimensional lumber, such as a two-by-six. You’ll also need to use stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners, as the chemicals in the treated lumber will cause regular galvanized fasteners to rust.

Knowing how close to the property line you can build a fence is an important planning step in your fence installation project. In many U.S. states, you are allowed to build a fence directly on the property line as long as your neighbor signs off on the plan. But check with your state government because some states and municipalities require a couple of inches before your property line.
