"Very professional. Wonderful to work with. We hired them to put an addition on our home. They did everything very well : foundation, building the rooms, putting in insulation, drywall, painting, flooring, windows, roofing, plumbing, framing doors and windows, ductwork. They even built raised flower bed structures to go around the outside of the new addition. They are a very talented and skilled company."

"AJ Drywall was great to work with. They took great care in protecting my newly installed floors. They replaced two walls of damaged drywall, mudded, sanded and painted our living room, kitchen and hallway as well as a utility room. Their prep work was outstanding as was their attention to details. Andres was great to work with as was his crew. Always available to answer my questions. Was easy to work with and accommodated our changes and additional workload. His crew is professional and hard working and never stopped moving while they were here. Drywall is messy work and AJ did everything to minimize the dust exposure. His workers are experienced and detailed and it shows in the quality of their work. When it comes to drywall and painting you will not go wrong using AJ Drywall. We will definitely use them in any future projects and believe you will also be very happy if you use them for your drywall and painting projects."

"Original person came. We verbally agreed on $800 for the project. He worked for three days and said he was finished. We wrote him a check for $800. Upon further review, the work was awful. We put a stop payment on the check. We asked Mr. Drywall to send someone else to fix the rest of the work. Two workers came on the 4th day and did a good job but needed to come to finish sanding. Now they are disputing the money. We offered to pay the first worker $350 for his work and $350 to the two workers who came on the 4th day. They are not happy with that."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

If you’re installing new drywall, you may need to skim coat the drywall first for a smooth finish and to allow the primer to adhere to the wall. It’s only necessary if there are imperfections in your drywall due to issues with the studs or improper drywall installation. If you’re refreshing existing walls, you may want to skim coat if there are imperfections across the wall. As an alternative, you can repair your drywall and sand it for a smooth finish before painting.

All plaster walls will crack over time due to normal house settling and expansion and contraction from temperature and moisture changes. Small, thin hairline cracks are generally not serious and are mostly a cosmetic issue. However, larger or more significant cracks can indicate structural problems.

Here's how to tell the difference:

  • Cosmetic Cracks: Cracks that are 0.5 cm (0.2 inches) or thinner are typically cosmetic.

  • Structural Cracks: Cracks wider than 0.5 cm, excessive or deep cracks, multiple cracks in the same area, or cracks that span around corners can signify a structural or foundation issue. Cracks along the joints where walls meet the ceiling also warrant attention.

For cracks wider than 0.5 cm, structural repair is needed. If a crack is 2.5 cm (1 inch) or wider, or if you notice any signs of a structural problem, it is best to contact a plaster repair professional to assess the damage.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

You can paint over drywall mud about 24 hours after application, but the exact timing depends on factors like humidity, temperature, and the thickness of the mud. For the best results, ensure the mud is completely dry to the touch and has changed from a darker gray to a lighter, chalky white. Don’t forget to sand and prime the drywall surface before you paint to create a smooth, even finish.

Yes, a one-story house can have a load-bearing wall. The load-bearing walls in a single-story home are usually the exterior walls. If the house has a basement with exposed walls, the arrangement of the beams can help indicate what walls are load-bearing.
