"I started researching new HVAC systems last fall when my old furnace was beginning to show signs it was nearing the end of life.  I had the advantage that my heat was still running, so I could take my time analyzing the different options.  I really did my homework proceeding to have no less than 6 different quotes from companies that installed all the major brands.  All 6 installers came with high marks either from Angies or other sources - so I started with those that had high marks only.  Most articles you will read advise (and rightfully so) to put as much importance, if not more, on the installer as you do the brand/mfg of HVAC.   OK, of the 6 installers, 1 stood out and that was Shutz Heating and Cooling.   Tony arrived at my house promptly and did a walk around, giving me his expert advice for duct work, sizing and pointing out several enhancements that he would make as part of the install (radius boot, larger duct work, relocating my humidifier, etc).  Some of the other quotes did the same, but the difference for me was the presentation and the level of details that Tony provided in his quote.  Tony's presentation was the most professional, by far, going through very patiently all the different options and telling me in plain english what the tradeoffs were.   I was sold on the pictures that Tony showed me of his customers standing next to his finished products.  More on that later. The quote was not the least expensive and it was not the most expensive of the 6.  It was on the higher end, but I was after total value and a trusted supplier that I could trust for a life time. After the initial visit, I had many followup questions, like exact part numbers of each and every component.  I bombarded all the vendors with questions throughout my 2 month evaluation. In all cased, Lena/Tony delivered the necessary info without any hesitation.  Others did not - several either were impatient to my constant questions or they would only provide me with vague answers.
Toward the end of the fall, I got it down to 2.  My top choice was Shutz and the other was Costco.  Costco was good, but they lacked the personal touch that I received from Shutz, who was exceptional.   Since my furnace was heating the house, I did not get the system put in right away.
Then in May, my AC failed and I was ready to make the move.  I called Lena right away and asked if their quote was still good since it was several months later.  She came back promptly and said they would honor the quote.  At this point, I pulled the trigger.  It was going to be a couple weeks before the install, so I was given temporary ACs to keep the house cool while we waited.
Ok, so at this point I could only hope that the install would live up to the great experience so far.   And did it!
Jeremy and Tony arrived on time the morning of the install. Went over a few things and started the work.  They worked all day for 2 days.  They had an additional helper (sorry can't remember his name).   Tony personally spent considerable time installing my system to ensure it would exceed my expectations.  They found a couple things in the process that were unexpected.  Like my hot water heater vent had broken behind the old furnace and was leaking carbon monoxide in my basement.  Tony fixed this as part of the install. The attention to detail was impeccable.  Like raising my unit up off the basement floor with a pad. This just showed me the passion for how they really wanted it to be done in the very best way possible.   The boot and duct work was exceptional.  And the final product was a "work of art" - literally.   I can't say enough about the job they did.   As someone who did his homework from the very beginning, comparing only the best of the best in the area of both service companies and brands, I can honestly say, you will not get any better in this area than a high efficiency system from Shutz Heating and Cooling.

Small jobs welcome

"Arrived an hour after the appointed time, but did call to let me know of the delay.

Immediately assessed how to best approach our HVAC system with their equipment and repositioned the truck from the driveway to a side street to shorten the distance from the vacuum to the ductwork.  Were very methodical in their approach to their task and asked permission to proceed.  Equipment (hoses, etc.) was moved to assure that furnishings were untouched and any debris was immediately cleaned up.  The equipment used (truck, vacuum, compressor, hoses, agitators, etc.) was top-notch.  Cameras and air flow gauges were equal to the tasks.

Were very thorough and informative.  Businesslike, yet friendly approach to conversation.

Each cold air return was cleaned with compressed air.  Each heating/cooling duct was blasted with compressed air, agitated with a multi-flailed whip, blasted again with compressed air and the resultant dust was drawn into the main ductwork and into the vacuum hose.  Holes made to accommodate the hoses were capped with plastic plugs that fit very snugly and the large holes in the cold and hot main ductwork created for the vacuum were capped by prefabbed plates that were placed and fastened with screws into the ducts.

Furnace, as well as air conditioning coils, were thoroughly cleaned, as was the dryer vent.

Overall, about 3.5 hours and a very, very clean system.  Great job - would recommend to anyone."

"I had one company come out to diagnose the problem. He quickly told me that the condenser outside was ruined and gave me a price to replace the unit. I called Toasty's and Michelle quickly got someone out to my house (it turned out to be the owner). He told me what was wrong and gave me an estimate. Not only was it HALF of what the other guy was charging, he was able to get me in the next day! I cannot say enough about Toasty's!! I will use them forever for all my HVAC needs."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

The cost to install a ductless mini-split AC system ranges from $2,000 to $14,000, depending on the type of unit, the number of zones or rooms, and the complexity of the installation. On the low end, a system for one or two zones in a single room costs around $2,000. Covering two zones for more rooms can cost between $6,000 and $8,000. For a larger multi-zone system to cover an entire home, costs can be $14,000. If you don’t already have an AC system in place, you may need to add the cost of permits, an electrician, and a concrete pad.

There are ways to detect a refrigerant leak with several different testing methods. However, most homeowners can figure out something’s wrong with their AC unit by noticing these common signs:

  • Ice forming on the evaporator coil

  • Water leaks near the AC unit

  • Frequent hissing sounds

  • Increased electric bills

  • Unit takes longer than usual to cool

  • Unit is blowing hot air

You should clean your air conditioner at least once per year, but you may need to clean your whole HVAC system (including the air ducts) more often. According to the National Air Duct Cleaners Association, you may need to clean them more frequently depending on factors like whether you smoke, have pets, or have allergies.

You need to know the square footage of your home first. Multiply that number by 20, which will get you the BTUs (British Thermal Units) needed to cool your home efficiently. Homes up to 1,000 square feet usually need a 1.5-ton unit; homes 1,000 to 1,200 square feet usually need a 1.75-ton unit, and homes 1,200 to 1,400 square feet usually need a 1.9-ton unit. Talk to a local pro for more specific advice on your home.

Freon will go in the refrigerant lines near the back of your AC unit. Look for small ports with caps on a thin copper line—the Freon goes into those ports. You are best off hiring a licensed HVAC professional who can complete the job safely and correctly.
