"In addition to a quality exterior stain and paint project, Valentino and his crew also completed exterior wood repairs. Replaced rotted wood, an overhang on the rear of the house and extensive woodpecker damage. General's cost was reasonable and we will hire them for future projects. I definitely recommend General Painting."

"WOW 1 Day Painting Metro Detroit did an excellent job. The only challenge was Mother Nature... Jason was very good to work with on scheduling as we had to postpone a couple times due to poor weather, but it worked out well. Daniel and his team did a stellar job and clean up. I am very please and so happy..! I highly recommend WOW Painting and will use these folks again for other projects."

"They did an excellent job, the paint looks amazing. But we were also impressed with their attention to detail with caulking and protecting our windows and brick before painting. They were fast and cleaned up afterwards. Would definitely hire them again."

"James was outstanding and did everything he quoted and was on time for the quote, power washing and paint job. He was east to work with and even did more work than he quoted and save us from having to paint one wall ourselves. We did the lower part of the house and he did the upper parts, dormers and chimney. I only wish we had more painting needing to be done because I will be going back to him and in the future. I will definitely refer my family and friends to have James quite for their painting projects. A++++ in my book."

Painting FAQs, answered by experts

Whether to brush or roll stain on wood depends on the project and your preference. Brushing is ideal for smaller, intricate areas and offers more control over the application, ensuring thorough coverage and penetration into the wood's grain.

Conversely, rolling is efficient for more extensive, flat surfaces and can save time. However, it is not always the best fit for textured or uneven wood. Some projects may benefit from combining both methods, using a brush for detail work and a roller for broader areas. Ultimately, the choice between brushing and rolling depends on the specific requirements of your staining project.

Adding a second coat of stain to wood can even out the color to some extent, but it won't drastically alter the hue if the initial application is too light or too dark. It's more effective at enhancing the richness of the color rather than significantly changing it. Ensure the first coat is dry before applying the second.

For homes in areas with extreme weather, high heat, or intense sun exposure, high-quality acrylic paint is the best option. Acrylic paint is durable, resistant to both heat and cold, and provides a protective barrier with excellent UV resistance. For best results, look for acrylics that contain natural earth pigments, which are better suited for resisting sun damage. While oil-based paint is also durable, it can be prone to fading in high heat and can become too viscous to apply easily in cold temperatures. Additionally, choosing a neutral or light color like gray, beige, or white can help, as these colors absorb less heat than darker shades.

You can use latex or acrylic paint outdoors. Although acrylic paint tends to last longer outside, it also costs more, so if you’re painting the outside of your house, for instance, latex paint is often a go-to option. However, acrylic will be your best choice if you want to spend some extra money for added durability.

The general consensus is that two coats of stain are required and since the cedar is siding, a third coat of sealant is always a good idea. This helps protect the wood and stain, so you won’t need to resand and restain for at least a decade. Each stain after the first will darken the wood, so be aware of that when choosing a colored stain.
