Phoenix Home Improvement rose from the ashes of a company we worked for which had to go out of business. Four partners who found in each other integrity, discipline and a desire to do good work came together to create an employee-owned company. We practice profit sharing, so that all members of the company (down to the "grunt") are owners. When you're dealing with any of us, you are dealing with an owner who cares deeply about our work and your trust in us. On occasion we use subcontractors, but only those whom we trust and who will work with the same kind of care that we have about our work. In order to establish integrity in our financial dealings, we ask for 50% down with the balance due when the job is complete. At present we are not able to provide financing.

"Hired to put roof on new construction. Job looked good from ground. BEWARE, go on roof and check gateways. Should be no nail heads visible, if they are over time they will leak. Unfortunately several were showing. These people are not professionals!!"

Siding questions, answered by experts

You cannot install clapboard siding on a bare, unprepared surface. Clapboard siding requires a clean, sturdy base made from plywood or similar materials, sometimes called backerboard. Then, it needs an underlayment or sheathing, a moisture membrane to help protect the exterior wall.

Note that sometimes clapboard siding is caulked as it’s installed for additional protection. We don’t suggest this: Caulking the siding can trap moisture inside the clapboards and lead to moisture damage over time. The siding needs some space to “breathe,” especially in rainy weather.

Clapboard siding is traditionally made of wood, and is one of the most common types of wood siding in North America. When people talk about wood siding, they are usually talking about clapboard siding. However, not all wood siding is in the clapboard style: It can be tongue-and-groove, shake, and other designs. Also, clapboard siding can sometimes be made of different materials, like vinyl or fiber cement, so the terms are not interchangeable.

No, you don’t need to use the same siding around the entire home. Using different siding for different walls can actually increase the soft value of your home. Many homeowners opt to add vinyl siding on the sides of their home not facing the street, opting for higher-end siding materials like stone or wood for the front of the house. Stone veneer siding can be a cost-effective option for homeowners who like the appearance of stone, but not the cost.

It’s possible to install vinyl siding over stucco, and if the stucco is in decent condition, it’s unlikely you’ll run into any issues. However, if you see water damage or mold growth on your stucco, or you have ongoing problems with your EIFS siding, including leaks, it’s best to remove the stucco first. This will reduce the risk of mold growth and pest infestation, allowing your pro to access and replace any damaged sheathing.

Caulking should be re-applied roughly every five years. It's natural for a home to settle and separate caulking from joints, so it's a good idea to assess the home every two years. A consistent siding maintenance schedule will help you see if the caulking is needed and address any potential issues before they occur.
