"It isn't done yet, but the construction manager is not being cooperative about some details that are very important to us. His comments on the material and timing for staining the deck are not consistent with information from lumber experts I know."

"We had storm damaged aluminum siding replaced with vinyl siding. This was done during January and we were cautioned that work would be performed weather permitting. Of course, all of the snow and rain arrived and it took longer than expected to be done. However, the work was top notch and workers extremely courteous and aware of maintaining a clean working area. Once the weather cleared the work was completed in a matter of days and upon inspection everything was done met our expectation. Very favorable follow through my management and workers. Highly satisfied and enthusiastically recommend them."

"A few years ago we had Smart Roofing put on a new roof and was very impressed with the quality and professionalism done. Richard was great to do business with so we contacted him again when we wanted siding done. Again, we were impressed with the quality of the product, installation and communication. Every step Richard communicated in a promptly manner. The team he assembled were very professional and mindful of our vegetation in our yard and when the job was completed they did a thorough job of picking up the siding debris. The team communicated through out the entire process and their timeframe of completion. I was very glad they inquire if we wanted our old light fixtures/outlet covers to go back or if we had new ones which I went out an bought new ones immediately. Smart Roofing made an impression that my neighbor used them and had their roof replaced in one day!"

"Working with DG Construction was great experience. The guys were all very professional, and there craftsmanship was impeccable. We had them tare off and replace our siding, new windows, doors, gutters, replace our old deck with a new one. They also put in a custom cedar ceiling in our out door porch. Greg and his guys always had a charismatic attitude and aimed to please."

"Brandon responded the same day I called with a visit to look over the project. He provided visuals and samples of the roofing products and explained the GAF roofing system. He answered all our questions, and we signed a detailed contract at a fair price. His crew was able to start the next week. Brandon calls and texts kept me informed of when things would happen, so there were no surprises. I had roofed my house myself two times in the past, and this crew of six took care to do a quality job. They protected the windows, siding, and deck and did a great job cleaning up. I am very happy I went with Harlow roofing."

Siding questions, answered by experts

How long siding takes to install depends on various factors, but averages seven to 14 days for a 1500 to 2000 square foot home. You may have a longer installation timeline if your house is large or architecturally complex, if you have underlying damage beneath the existing siding, or if the weather delays the installation process.

Different types of siding provide unique aesthetic and structural features, with each material commanding its own cost. Availability of materials and shipping costs also factors largely into the cost. The common types of siding materials include:

  • Stucco: $7–$9 per square foot

  • Wood: $1–$15 per square foot

  • Engineered wood: $1–$6 per square foot

  • Aluminum: $3–$6 per square foot

  • Fiber cement: $5–$14 per square foot

  • Brick: $10–$20 per square foot

  • Brick veneer: $3–$10 per square foot

  • Stone: $7–$30 per square foot

  • Stone veneer: $5–$11 per square foot

Pressure washing shou sugi ban siding is generally not a good idea. The charring process used in creating shou sugi ban siding involves burning the wood's surface to achieve its unique appearance and enhanced durability. The charred surface is delicate, and pressure washing can easily damage it. Instead of pressure washing, you can clean it with a soft brush or broom to remove loose debris, followed by a mixture of mild soap and water applied with a soft cloth or sponge.

Vinyl siding will fade slowly over time but will likely be most noticeable starting 10–15 years after installation. This timeline varies based on factors such as the climate where you live. In areas with more extreme hot or cold conditions, vinyl is likely to fade more quickly.

While vinyl is the less expensive option, composite siding has been known to be more durable than vinyl. In addition, because it is made from recycled materials, it is a more ecologically-friendly choice. Composite siding is also more luxurious looking and comes in a much wider range of styles and colors.
