"Andrew came to our house between Ann Arbor and Plymouth at 8 PM on Tuesday when a storm caused an electrical outage. We had a generator but we're only getting partial power in the house. Andrew ran tests inside the house, determining that not enough power was coming into the house. He then started testing different areas of the generator until he found the part not working. Once he located the problem, he quickly fixed it. Because he didn't give up on me or my problem, he restored electricity, saving me hundreds from food spoilage in a refrigerator and freezer. I don't think most electricians would have stuck with the problem or been able or willing to fix the generator. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would."

"Great service! Very accommodating to emergency needs. I called St. John Electric to do some work for my mother's home and I'm really glad I did. Kevin explains things patiently, works diligently, and creatively to find the best solutions for the electrical need. This is just a 'great' electrical service company to keep on your speed dial!"

"Joshua came to my home because I’ve lost power in parts of my home. He took a look at my homes electrical system and then we sat down where he explained the issue to me. He worked hard and even pulled a permit for the job and because of his hard work my home has all of its power back on."

Sometimes you open up an outlet and you find this. I am glad that it did not turn into something more.

"Writer is a true professional and electrical guru. He arrived within the allotted time frame, got right to work and quickly identified the problem. He even welcomed me to watch him while he worked as he explained the intricacies of the electrical outlet (which was a GFCI multi-branched oulet, connected to other garage and bathroom outlets). It was clear he knew what he was doing. I would recommend him for any electrical problem or fresh installation, and plan to hire him in the future for other electrical projects I have around my house."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

In Ferndale, intermittent power loss, warm outlets, or mild electrical odors often signal underlying issues that could escalate. If your basement is damp, moisture can worsen electrical problems quickly. Relying on extension cords or noticing lights dimming when appliances run may indicate your breaker panel or wiring needs updating to meet modern electrical safety standards.

Helpful?

To make electrical projects safer in Ferndale, install tamper-resistant outlets and GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. Use outlet covers and secure cords to prevent access by children and pets. Consider elevating outlets in areas prone to moisture and upgrading your breaker panel for added surge protection, which helps safeguard electronics during Ferndale’s frequent storms.

Helpful?

In Ferndale, consider scheduling electrical work if you notice frequent breaker trips, flickering lights, or outlets that stop working—especially during seasonal changes. Homes built before 1960 often need rewiring, while those from later decades may require breaker panel upgrades. If you detect burning smells or see two-prong outlets, act quickly to ensure your home’s electrical safety before harsh weather arrives.

Helpful?

Electrical maintenance in Ferndale should include seasonal inspections—check outdoor wiring each fall, test GFCI outlets after winter, and ensure air conditioning wiring is secure before summer. Inspect basement electrical for moisture damage due to the city’s high water table. Schedule annual professional inspections for homes over 20 years old, and trim tree branches near power lines to reduce storm-related electrical risks.

Helpful?

For electrical projects in Ferndale, copper wiring is preferred due to its durability in Michigan’s fluctuating temperatures. Opt for moisture-resistant THWN-2 copper wire, especially in basements or crawl spaces prone to dampness. Install GFCI outlets in all wet areas and weather-resistant outlets for exterior use. AFCI breakers are required for bedrooms, and upgrading to a modern breaker panel can help handle power surges from frequent storms.
