The septic installation company must follow several steps to put in a new septic system and leach field. Those include failing to regularly pump or service it every three to five years, placing too much weight atop the system—by parking your car on top of it or because of a heavy snow buildup for instance—or because of structural damage done by overgrown tree roots.

An outdoor water valve typically has a round or oval handle that you can turn to control the water flow. It may be located in a protective box or pit near the property line, where the main water line connects to your house.

Most septic tanks can handle two to three loads of laundry per day, or a weekly total of between seven and 10 loads. Although septic systems do require homeowners to be somewhat careful with their plumbing systems—for instance, it’s not a good idea to flush a bunch of toilet paper all at once—they can still handle fairly heavy use.
