The generator worked fine throughout the winter, seemingly kicking on in seconds every time the power went out. We then heard from BC Electric in August 2014 to schedule an annual maintenance, which we mailed the check that same day 'to get on the list'. After a few calls during the next four months, always reassured that they would get to us, their son, technician Rob just arrived on December 22nd, 2014. I understand that the annual maintenance is mostly changing the oil and am not sure what else.
Understand that the generator is in the back of the house, and with snow, never walked out back to check that the 'green light' was on, showing it was operational, until I noticed this light was 'red' and then our weekly test run was not happening either. I called BC Electric and spoke with Mrs. Carlson on January 12th 2015 and informed her that the generator was not working, I had not noticed the weekly 15 minute automatic test run, and probably hadn't been functioning/operational since her son had done the maintenance on it.
On Tuesday morning I heard from Bob Carlson, and informed him of everything I had told his wife the previous day. I heard from his son Rob about 2 hours later that same morning, and he instructed me to go outside, and try to manually start the generator while he was on the phone with me. I did as he instructed, held down the throttle while trying to crank it, probably spent 15 minutes on the phone with him and it would not start, and Rob informed me 'I'll be right down'. Foolish me, I assumed this meant That Day, or That Week! When Wednesday late afternoon came and we had no visit from BC Electric, we called them again, as usual almost Never does anyone answer the phone, and left a message. On Thursday Mrs. Carlson called in midday, didn't remember us or talking with us or what the issue had been, repeated it all again. Then on Friday we heard from Rob via phone, he didn't know who I was or what the problem was either, and refreshed his memory. He said "I will be there next week, probably not on Monday but probably Tuesday". The entire next week came and went, and we heard from no one at BC Electric nor did anyone from their company show up!
This brings us to Sunday January 25th with the impending Nor'Easter coming the very next day, severe weather warnings for days previous, and my wife called them and left a desperate message, and of course, no one answered the phone or returned the call. Monday morning we called a local electrician out of desperation, but low and behold Rob Carlson shows up unannounced at around 10 am. He tinkers around with the generator, tells me "I'm 99% sure it is a propane issue, I'm not allowed to work on that, call your propane company" and he left. Maritime Energy was here within the hour, their technician walked over to the generator, didn't even bring his tools out of his truck yet, asked me to try to start it, I did, pushed the manual start button, and it started fine, and has run ever since. Oh and that local electrician showed up that morning too when Rob was already here and just left. We had to pay Maritime $80 for their unnecessary service call, obviously not their fault though. Also out of desperation that morning when a week had passed and never heard from BC Electric, I had left a message with another Generac dealer who called me that evening. I told him what happened and he told me that Rob should have checked with a gauge to know 'if it was a propane issue' or not.
Bottom line is that it is highly unlikely that it was just a 'coincidence' that all of a sudden the generator started working after Rob Carlson showed up, as I had tried to manually start it at least 15 or 20 times those past two weeks myself. I dare say he left something disconnected when he did the service in December, noticed it on January 26th, fixed it and then claimed it was a 'propane issue'.
As I write this it is February 17th, and not once ever has anyone from BC Electric ever called to see if we ever got our generator running! Need I say more? Maybe their biggest business is making commissions on selling generators. "Customer Service" is not even understood by this company. Totally inexcusable!
