"It was a large project that took over four weeks to complete. Markus and his crew of two worked very hard, full days despite most days being very hot. They even worked a full Saturday after the previous day was rained out. We provided a photo of the outdoor fireplace we wanted and they built it beautifully. The project supervisor, CJ, was very easy to work with and made sure the project would "make us happy forever"."

"Turned out even better than expected, Mike suggested removal of a cement pad we had not considered and it gave us a lot of extra space in a small courtyard backyard where every inch counted. I cannot think of any single issue, it went faster than estimated (2 days) and everything was as requested. Very highly recommended.

Customers say: Quality work

"David and Catherine have a great crew and do what they say is going to be done, in the time frame agreed to. They did a large project for us right before Thanksgiving. His crews worked late some times to ensure they where done on time. The workmanship is fantastic, paying attention to every little detail. Davids design and installation crew greatly exceeded our expectations... We cannot say enough about HL design! You can hire with confidence, David and Catherine will do you right."

Outdoor Kitchens questions, answered by experts

The best types of wood for outdoor kitchen cabinets are those naturally resistant to weather, water, heat, fading, and mold or mildew. Excellent choices include teak, mahogany, white oak, and Brazilian walnut. It's best to avoid softwoods like pine and cedar, as they are more susceptible to damage and can catch fire easily. For extra protection, ensure the wood is pressure-treated. Regardless of the wood you choose, you will need to apply sealants, oils, and stains regularly to protect your cabinets from the elements.

You can build an outdoor kitchen on a deck, but you should choose composite decking since it's more heat-resistant. Metal deck materials like steel and aluminum are also good choices because they're less flammable than wood. You should also consider the weight of the kitchen—make sure your deck can support it and any appliances you plan to use. You should consult a structural engineer to confirm exactly how much weight your deck can safely support when building an outdoor kitchen.

In most cases, yes, an outdoor living space adds value to your home. The trick to your best return on investment is to choose high-quality building materials that will look nice and durable without crossing the line into total luxury that becomes cost-ineffective. For example, there’s no need to install marble tiles around your pool, but a durable and aesthetically pleasing deck will go a long way.

A fireplace is, by definition, an enclosed space where you burn wood or other fuel for the purpose of generating light and heat. A firepit burns wood and is much less expensive to build, but they aren’t technically a fireplace as it isn’t enclosed. An outdoor oven—commonly outdoor brick pizza ovens—often uses wood as fuel, but its primary purpose is to cook food, and you’d rarely just burn wood inside them for warmth or aesthetic reasons.

Deciding whether to buy a prebuilt fireplace kit or build one from scratch comes down to aesthetics, available space, and budget. Many homeowners like the convenience and lower cost of prebuilt options—around $1,500—versus the involved planning and construction of a larger fireplace. Another bonus: you can usually move prebuilt units. Custom projects are more common when homeowners have access to a larger budget and more area in the yard to place the fireplace.
