"Much to expensive for the minor repair needed. Only had to mud three sides since the 4th was the floor. I had even spoken to the manager prior to purchasing the 4 hours because I wasn't sure it would take all 4 hours. He assured me I would receive my money back if there was additional money left over and that upon explaining the job it would take two trips so the mud could dry and 2 hours per trip seemed easily doable. I was very disappointed that we work too more than 4 hours total. Again, no painting was included.

"Mr. Davis responded quickly to our request for drywall and insulation restoration work after our basement flooded, and even though our original start date was postponed by a major snowstorm, he kept us informed. Once started, the work proceeded on schedule and was of very high quality. Working with Mr. Davis and his team was straightforward. Changes and requests were accepted and handled smoothly even as we extended the scope of the job as it went along."

"If anyone is in need of any type of deck work I highly recommend Mr. Frank Oliva and his Deck Solutions Team at 301-792-1117. They recently restored my deck expertly and was very pleased with every aspect of their work, (reviewing products, installation, pricing and warranty). They were extremely courteous, responsive, punctual and professional!"

"I purchased a coupon for 3 hours of handyman services at a discount (additional time was paid at the regular hourly rate, which was comparable to or lower than the other services I received estimates from). Scheduling was easy - they were flexible on dates and had availability when we needed it (they were able to get someone out quicker than several others I called, which was important as we were preparing for a special event). The quality of the work was excellent. The handyman was very pleasant and professional. He arrived right on time and assessed the work to be done and came up with a shopping list. My one concern was the amount of time it took to shop for supplies - the Home Depot is 10-15 minutes from our house, but he was gone for close to 2 hours picking up the supplies - so the better part of the 3 hours we purchased in advance was consumed in shopping. I got worried that perhaps he was lost or having some difficulty so I called the office - they checked on him and indicated that he had to wait for a pallet of lattice to be brought in. It still seemed like a long time given that the shopping list was relatively small. The deck was a bigger job than I thought - he took time and care measuring, cutting and fitting the lattice to do the job correctly, which I appreciated. As a result of the extended shopping time and the size of the deck job, the work took substantially longer than anticipated, which meant it cost much more than expected. I recognize that this was partly due to the scope being larger than I thought, which I have no problem with - but the duration of the shopping trip honestly left me feeling like I did not get the full value of the coupon. In addition to the labor, I received an itemized receipt for the supplies. I had a couple of questions, which they quickly responded to. They removed the charge for an item that was purchased but not used. They were very professional and easy to work with. I would definitely recommend them and I would definitely use them again, although I would try to purchase supplies in advance if possible.

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

When installing deck boards, screws are generally a better option than nails. Screws offer superior holding strength over time, keeping the boards securely in place. In contrast, nails are more likely to pop out, which can create a tripping hazard. While you can use either, we recommend using 3-inch galvanized deck screws. To minimize the risk of cracking the wood, it's a good practice to drill small pilot holes before driving the screws into the deck joists.

Deck boards should be spaced no more than three-eighths of an inch apart. This is enough space to allow water and small debris to pass through without collecting on the surface, but not enough to create a tripping hazard. Certain materials, like pressure-treated wood, shrink over time, so they may need less space at installation.

No. In most cases, it’s not colder or freezing temperatures that affect decking materials but the amount of moisture that seeps into the materials as a result. For example, wood decking material is more likely to suffer from rot or decay when exposed to excess moisture from snow or ice. An extreme change in temperature can cause wood to expand or contract, but only if it’s not properly treated beforehand.

Any wood deck provides some ventilation to the area below, as is the nature of that type of deck design. However, areas that experience excessive humidity and associated moisture benefit greatly from a dedicated ventilation system in the form of strip vents. This addition helps the various wood boards contract and expand evenly throughout the years and reduces the chances of twisting, warping, and buckling.

There are more pros than cons when staining a deck. Deck stain is more affordable than paint, it protects the wood and allows the natural textures to shine through, and it can revive the appearance of your home. However, deck stain also requires prep work (sometimes days or more), carries more upkeep than a painted deck, and can fade over time if not cared for.
