"Kurt was very responsive, highly knowledgeable and honest. He assessed my deck and porches and recommended a course of action that would be cost effective and look good. He was very thorough in answer all my questions and explaining the rationale for his recommendations. I will definitely contact Kurt again for my deck and porch needs. Highly recommend!"

"Very smoothly; it did go a bit longer than the original estimate but since they were to use what parts of the deck that were still in good shape while rebuilding we found more damaged wood than could be seen before the deck itself was disassembled."

"The carpenter (working from a high ladder) replaced the rotted wood with new pieces (cut to fit), sealed the joints and restained the new pieces to match. It was a very professional job."

"I hired TNT to power wash and stain my neglected deck and to fix the steps, which had become askew over time. They quoted me a fair price from the start and were able to knock out the project in two days, even when they ended up having to replace the full stringer of steps. Henry (the owner) did a great job of communicating throughout the process and I would definitely use TNT again for future deck work and other home improvement projects. Highly recommend."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Yes, and in some cases, frozen ground may improve the digging process for footings due to sturdier conditions. It’s easier than working in muddy conditions, which are more common in the spring. Contractors may use machinery that makes this step a breeze, so harder ground shouldn’t affect the building process.

Always sand a deck before repainting so the wood is smooth and ready for paint. While you do not need to fully remove paint before repainting, sanding helps remove any areas with weather and sun damage. Sanding also helps remove chipped or flaking paint and opens the wood pores to improve paint adhesion.

Wood decks need to be replaced every 10 to 15 years on average. Natural wood is highly vulnerable to infiltration and damage from moisture, which can occur rapidly due to exposure to outdoor elements. You can protect your deck and maximize its lifespan by sealing it every year or two.

Yes, it is possible to add an under-deck drainage system to an existing deck by retrofitting it to the structure. This process may require some prep work. For example, many drainage systems are installed on top of the deck joists, which would require you to remove the decking boards and railings first. To avoid this, you could opt for a below-the-joist drainage system. For best results and to ensure proper installation, it is recommended to consult a professional. A pro can inspect your deck, make any necessary repairs, and then install the drainage system correctly.

No, you don’t need a permit to repair and replace a few boards on an existing deck. However, if you’re making structural changes to the deck or tearing down the old one and building a new one, you will likely need a permit. Check with your local municipality for the regulations and rules in your area, or ask a local contractor who builds decks for advice.
