"Driveway looks great now. Crew was able to come out quickly and got the job done in less than a day. Price wasn't the cheapest offer I received, but not the most expensive, either. In all, a fair value."

"Joe and the crew from E Stanley did a great job widening our driveway. The job consisted of three parts. First, dig under the existing driveway and remove the roots that were growing underneath. Second, dig a couple of feet on both sides of our existing driveway to widen it out. Finally, pour asphalt on top of the driveway to replace the old one. Joe came in at the best price and finish the entire job in a single day.."

"Capital Paving & Sealcoating re-paved out driveway this week - - it is nearly 200 feet long and wide enough for three cars at the garage. They did an excellent job. They showed up on time, kept us informed every step of the way and truly cared about the quality of the work. They gave us an honest assessment of our driveway and pro's and con's of the options. I highly recommend them - - you won't be disappointed!"

"I have a 28 year old asphalt driveway that needed to be resurfaced. He was prompt providing a quote at a fair price compared to three others. His crew did one day of prep work consisting of digging out crumbled/cracked areas and edging the entire 300' driveway. The next day they applied 2" of asphalt and did a perfect job with great attention to detail. Then they cleaned up the whole area and it looks great. Richard Golobo and his crew have my highest recommendation. I could not be happier with the whole job."

"April 2016: After getting estimates from various providers, i chose Washington for price and pictures on their website. When they first repaved the driveway, they said they would come in the morning but came in the afternoon. They completed the driveway work late in the evening. It looked nice at first. During the same time i had another contractor working on another project at the house and as soon as he saw the driveway, he said the driveway is uneven. I am not an expert so i couldn't tell. That spring, and the summer, i would have puddles in my driveway and my boys couldn't play basketball for hours after the rain was gone. I got busy with work and travel so just couldn't get to talk to Washington about the issue. So in November 2017, I reached out to Joe about the issues we were having and i also sent him the pictures. It took me countless number of emails, phone calls and false promises for them to come out and patch the driveway. Now in July 2018, i still get puddles on the driveway after the rain. And i noticed another serious issue is that because they added 3 inches of asphalt over existing driveway, rain water now flows closer to the house right next to it than before when the driveway was lower and water was flowing away from the house. I am not sure If i can get them to fix this driveway But i wanted to share my experience so other customers are informed. Being expert in the area, I wished Joe and Washington pavement advised me on how rain water would flow when raising the driveway by 3 inches. But I have to say that Joe was polite and respectful every time i called him and whenever i was able to speak to him. But the quality of work wasn't what I expected."

"I called and spoke with Ben, Jr. and was able to schedule for a free quote. Our driveway was chipping asphalt in many places so it needed to be resurfaced. Ben came out explained what needed to be done and what they would do and gave me a quote. He said they would excavate 3-4 feet from the edge of the garage door in the driveway and about 1-2 feet from the end of the asphalt of the driveway to the apron of our driveway. The quote came in line with another quote I got and lower than one other. I decided to go with Ben Burris because Ben, Jr. was able to take the time to explain exactly and how they would do the job. We did have some problems with his phone with not being able to leave a voice mail but he did called me right away anyway. The day of the job, Ben called me to say that they need to get into my garage so they could excavate the 3-4 feet of asphalt from the end of the garage door down the driveway. He never mentioned that he needed access to the garage and I was at work. Luckily, I was able to get my son to come over to open the garage for him. When I got home they were wrapping up. The driveway looked beautiful and I was very pleased with the job. When they say they will put 3-4 inches of new asphalt and compressed it down, they were not kidding. My driveway got a lift. They sloped the access from the driveway to the walkway and sidewalks. Ben said that I could pull into the garage in 1-2 days and will take at least 5 days to park the SUV on it as long as we don't turn the wheels while stationary. In about a week the asphalt should have cured completely and there are no restrictions. For extra precaution, we did not park on the driveway for exactly one week. I did pull into the garage after 2 days. There was a tire mark on the driveway after one week but Ben said that it was probably due to the oil from the asphalt that made the mark from the tire and should eventually disappear or lightened as the oil from the asphalt fades away. He said he would come by to take a look and would contact me if he thought it would be a problem so that they could come out and fix it. A couple of days later, it was hard to see the tire mark so I guess it was cosmetic. I waited at least a week to write the review because we were going to get several inches of rain and I wanted to see how well the rain runs down the driveway and not puddle. After a week of rain, everything was fine. I would definitely recommend Ben Burris Paving. Thanks Ben."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

The three most common types of asphalt are hot asphalt, MC cold mix, and UPM asphalt. Hot asphalt is used most often for paving and patching roadways while it’s hot and workable. MC cold mix asphalt cures more slowly than hot asphalt, but it can be used for temporary patches and repairs in low-traffic areas. UPM is also used cold, but it can be used as a longer-term fix, usable in almost any conditions at almost any temperature.

While paving a driveway is possible to do as a DIY project, we don’t recommend it. Hiring a driveway professional to pave it will ensure that your driveway looks neat and clean and lasts for years to come, and it will also prevent a weak driveway and, potentially, damage to your foundation. Paving a driveway requires heavy machinery, and while you can rent the equipment needed, operating it close to your garage slab or around your home’s foundation can crack it and lead to structural issues.

Wet cutting is usually the preferred method. It controls dust, which helps protect your lungs and makes for a cleaner working environment. Plus, the water cools the blade, preventing overheating and prolonging its life while providing smoother, more precise cuts. The downside is the mess—water and asphalt sludge can be messy to clean. Dry cutting, though convenient if water isn’t available, creates a lot of dust, which can be harmful. This also increases the risk of blade damage due to overheating. So, if you have the option, wet cutting is the better method for most asphalt jobs.

Asphalt and tarmac are not the same thing. Traditional tarmac, short for tarmacadam, uses tar as a binder to hold crushed stone together. Asphalt uses bitumen—a byproduct of crude oil—to bind aggregate. Though tarmac was once a go-to for roads, asphalt has become the modern standard. And these days, most surfaces referred to as “tarmac” are actually asphalt. So, while the names may overlap, the key distinction lies in the binder—tar for tarmac and bitumen for asphalt.

Yes, it is possible to pave over an existing driveway, but whether it's the right choice depends on several factors. If the underlying structure of your current driveway is still strong, concrete or asphalt resurfacing can be a cost-effective way to prolong its life. However, if your driveway has significant issues like potholes, deep cracks, or other inconsistencies, it is best to remove the old driveway and start from scratch. Key factors to consider include the current driveway's condition, the compatibility of the new material, the added thickness and height, and the necessary surface preparation.
