"The technician, Harley, came to my house on a Sunday, since that was the most convenient day for my availability.  We reviewed the various jobs, and he made a detailed list of what was needed.  I had already bought some of the supplies with the intention of doing the work myself: the handicap grab bar and the chandelier (it had been in the box in my garage for 3 years, but I was anxious about having my husband climb a tall ladder and mess around with wiring.)
On his return visit, the service technician brought all the tools & supplies to do the work. There was a lot of work, and although he spent several hours, everything was done quickly and efficiently, and he cleaned up everything completely.  I was impressed.
Then I asked Harley to look at the exterior of the North (shady) side of my house, where wood rot has deteriorated the siding.  He pointed out things I had missed, and then measured and calculated, and put together a very comprehensive quote for the replacement & repairs.  I'm looking forward to having him come back to do that big job before snowy weather sets in.

"Marty who owns Home Deck inc was responded very quickly to the request for an estimate, he reviewed the work and chatted with me so that he fully understood what I wanted. He provided me with several suggestions on how to best repair the deck including options to either go with more expensive solutions that entailed more work but would last longer as well as simpler solutions that would perhaps be good for 5-10 years. He responded to all of my questions with very good explanations and also went over the pros and cons of other ideas that I had in mind. His communication was excellent and he forewarned me of a delay due to the late delivery of some materials. However, he completed the job on the same day as scheduled. I felt very comfortable with his knowledge and would definitely use him again."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

No, you don’t need a permit to repair and replace a few boards on an existing deck. However, if you’re making structural changes to the deck or tearing down the old one and building a new one, you will likely need a permit. Check with your local municipality for the regulations and rules in your area, or ask a local contractor who builds decks for advice.

The best material for your deck depends on several factors, including your budget, location, aesthetic preferences, and the level of maintenance you’re willing to do. Wood decking, like redwood, ipe, cedar, and pine, lasts the longest, but it’s more expensive and requires more upkeep than composite and synthetic decking.

The “best” material is in the eye of the beholder, as each common decking material boasts its pros and cons. Poured concrete is the best budget-friendly option, but composite wood brings high-grade aesthetics without breaking the bank. Wood is the most traditional material, but it requires more maintenance than some other materials. In other words, do your research before settling on a deck material to find the one that’s best for your pool.

Yes, you can draw your own deck plans in many cases. However, you must know your local building codes and be familiar with carpentry principles. Even then, it's always best to run your plans by a professional contractor with experience building decks, whether you choose to DIY some of the build or not.

Any wood deck provides some ventilation to the area below, as is the nature of that type of deck design. However, areas that experience excessive humidity and associated moisture benefit greatly from a dedicated ventilation system in the form of strip vents. This addition helps the various wood boards contract and expand evenly throughout the years and reduces the chances of twisting, warping, and buckling.
