"Terrible company. Possibly a scam. They attempted to sell me a part they didn't even have, and after waiting patiently for OVER A MONTH, I canceled my order. When calling them to confirm, they told me they never had the part to sell to me. What a joke!"

"First visit to this shop. I, owner being 69 yrs. old, had to remove my 21”lawnmower from my car using metal ramps provided by this shop as they did not provide any physical assistance. I replaced spark plug and oil filter prior to taking my lawnmower to Pat’s outdoor equipment. paid 40.00 mandatory down payment. Called week later and informed that the spark plug, oil filter had to be replaced and carburetor needed cleaning. Asked if they had correct mower as I had replaced the spark plug and oil filter less than 2 weeks ago myself. Assured correct mower. Asked how that could be, no answer. Requested another mechanic evaluate my mower which was done. Same result. I requested what the fee would be to clean carburetor. Total after 40.00 down payment was $99.07. Total with down payment 139.07. With replacing spark plug and oil filter $167.89. I declined further service. Went across the street to Zimmerman’s Ace Hardware, evaluated, carburetor clogged, old fuel drained and replaced, drained overfilled oil. Total fee $ 87.95. So dishonest. Do not go to Pat’s."

Lawn Tool Repair questions, answered by experts

Before your lawn mower quits working entirely, it’ll likely give you some signs of wear and tear that indicate a repair is needed. Signs that you might need repairs to your lawn mower include:

  • Oil leaks

  • Vibrating engine

  • Smoking exhaust

  • Increase in time to mow

  • Unusual noises

  • Increase in gas consumption

The cord you pull to start a lawn mower is commonly called the “starter cord” or “pull cord.” This uses and internal combustion process to start the lawn mower engine and it prone to wear and tear over time. You’ll want to check the starter cord as part of your regular lawn mower tune-up process.

Sometimes dark smoke trailing out of your lawn mower is the result of excess oil. It smokes as it burns off. Other times, it could signal a problem with the combustion or contaminated fuel. If changing the fuel and cleaning your mower doesn’t help, call a professional (especially if the smoke is white).

In many cases, it might be cheaper to repair your lawn mower than to replace it, depending on what needs to be repaired. The cost to replace a lawn mower dramatically varies, from $60 for basic models to over $15,000 for the top-of-the line models.

Small repairs like a spark plug replacement can be as little as $20, so replacing the whole lawn mower wouldn’t make much sense. However, repairing a crankshaft could be much more expensive at $500 to $900, so depending on the age of your mower, it might be best to replace it. It’s best to speak with your lawn mower repair technician to determine which option is best for you.

Replacing a lawn mower pull cord yourself should only cost you the supplies, which comes to around $25. For more complex repairs, you’ll need to get a quote from a local lawn mower repair shop.
